Brussel Sprouts

What do brussel sprouts taste like?  No one in my family ever ate them so I automatically made the assumption that they were gross.  DH is the same way.  I've seen some recipes that look pretty appetizing that include roasted brussel sprouts.  Can anyone describe what they taste like? Do you like them or dislike them? These are my random thoughts for the night, lol!

Re: Brussel Sprouts

  • Kind of like a cooked lettuce or cabbage, but sweeter and firmer and a more buttery taste. HTH! I personally don't care for them, but it is mainly because of the smell. My DH loves them and says that a well cooked one is like spinach artichoke dip, but better.
  • If you're going to try them for the first time, definitely go with fresh rather than frozen. I actually like fresh ones that are grilled or sauteed with butter and bacon. Yum!
  • OMG I love Brussels Sprouts! This is the perfect question for me. Brussels sprouts, at least the way I make them, kind of taste nutty and rich. I love nutty flavors, and they go well with nuts (obviously) and cheese. My husband hates the way they make the house smell (sort of sulfurous I guess) so I only make them when he's away for the night. A lot of people roast them, which I think is okay (you cut them in half lengthwise, toss in olive oil and salt, and roast in a hot oven), but here is my favorite brussels sprouts recipe:

You should try it! You might like it. They're so good for you. And I agree, get fresh ones--I've never used frozen. They have little bags of them at HEB and Central market.

  • I was like you - didn't grow up eating them, had zero desire to try them.  I had my first brussel sprouts at age 32, just a few months ago. Embarrassed  they were actually not bad!  the ones we had were roasted, if I remember correctly it was very simple - just olive oil and salt and pepper.  but I bet with cheese it would be good, too...hell, everything tastes better with cheese, IMO.

  • I'm glad you posted this.  I've always wondered, too.

  • Thanks ladies!  I think I'm going to try them if I can convince DH...
