I am Debbie Downer today- need to vent (kind of BR)

So I failed my one hour glucose test. I hear it happens often but on top of it they told me I am VERY anemic. I called Mark and told him and he started freaking out. I know that I will be fine (at least I hope) but I need to get iron pills, a few things from the store and I leave for my flight at 2pm for the rest of the week. Pray this trip goes better than my last and that the weather in Orlando makes me get over this stupid cold..

Did any other niners fail this test? How bad was the 3 hour?

  • Aw, I'm sorry to hear all of that:(

I certainly hope this trip goes smoothly for you....you deserve it!

  • I know failing the one hour is pretty common. I will also warn you to take some stool softeners or something with your iron pills. And you may want to play around with when you take them.. I know some people have sensitive stomachs when it comes to iron.

Congrats to both my TTC buddies, Amberley18 and sb2006 on their beautiful babies!
  • Thanks for the heads up... I will play around with them to make sure it doesnt kill my tummy!

  • Aw I'm sorry but you're right it is common. Still sucks though. I'm pretty sure most pregnant women have an iron deficiency. I have one and my doc recommended Ferrous Sequels bc its softer on your stomach. i havent had any problems with it at all! GL! And don't get too worried about it. It'll be ok!
Baby, you've got the sort of eyes that tell me tales...

  • As others have said, yes, failing the 1-hour is very common - just try not to stress over the 3 hour.  I did not have to take it, but I remember quite a few of the girls on the Sept 2010 mommy board did have to take it and posted about it.  Their biggest complaint was that they literally had to sit there for like 4 hours and we're starving by the end because they hadn't been allowed to eat since the night before. So bring books, cross-stitch, whatever will keep you chill and entertained for a while and a healthy snack to eat as soon as you're done.  It is also my understanding that if you do not pass the 3-hour, they will first try to change your diet to keep it under control, and only have you start using the insulin shots if you show a severe case or changing your diet is not working.
  • I also failed my one hr and had to do the three hr. It wasn't as bad as I thought. I went really early (like 630am) and they had a special recliner for me and I just loaded a new book on my kindle and settled in. The hrs went pretty fast and before I knew it I was done. The drink is a little bigger for the 3 hr and my arm was a little sore from having blood taken 4 times but it wasn't bad.

As for the anemic, I was also told last week that I am severly anemic and put on supplements. The one they gave me has vitamin C in it which is easy on your stomach and helps you absorb it better.

GL and I hope you feel better knowing your not alone which failing the test.

  • I've always had low iron. I'll be concerned when we get pg. I've often tried to donate blood, but I don't make the cut.

I'm sorry that you're going through this now. I hope this trip goes well, and the cold passes quickly.

  • Thanks ladies- you always make me feel so much better!
  • I failed the one hour as well and had to do the 3 hour. It wasn't that bad, just make sure you have a book to keep you occupied! I passed the 3 hour with no problem, and I'm sure you will too.
  • oh bummer! Hopefully the iron pills will help you anemia. Get the kind chelated to polysaccharides, they're much, much easier on your stomach (I've been on 150mg/daily for 9 years, and I've never had any problems as long as I take it with food).

Good luck on your next glucose tolerance test!

  • I don't know anything about the glucose test obviously, but as a once borderline anemic myself, my doctor recommended taking 1000mg of Vitamin C every day rather than iron pills.  Vitamin C helps your body absorb more of the iron you're eating (from meats and leafy greens).  Worked like a charm.  I used to never be able to give blood, now my iron passes with flying colors.  Might be an option to explore before you do the iron pills, especially since they are so hard on your stomach.  HTH!

I agree with this... The prenatals I take do not contain iron but are high in Vitamin C and so far my iron levels been good.  I also have been craving fruits like oranges, grapes and strawberries, so I'm sure that's been helping.

I'm sorry you didn't pass the 1 hr test! Sad  Ditto pp that it's not uncommon to not pass and having to take the 3 hour.  I know it's easier said than done but try not too stress too much about it!  When do you go for your 3 hr?

Enjoy your trip and I hope you return home to warmer weather. Keep your chin up, only 12 weeks left!!!Smile

  • Time is flying- I did make it to Orlando without a hitch so that isnt too bad. I am staying in a terrible motel- not hotel that we requested. I am glad my boss is here to appreciate the trials with me. Its actually making the trip more bearable. I wont be around much during the day the rest of the week but I will try to keep up at night. I am ready to get the 3 hour over with and hope it comes out well. I think I feel more sorry for the person that has to take my blood since I have TERRIBLE veins.
  • I'm late Kel, but low iron and even if you do have GD, a modified diet for less than 3 months isn't too terribly bad.  Just focus on the baby and getting your husband on a fierce house hunt- hopefully everything will work itself out.

If not, you can always hang a hammock from the ceiling of your apartment for your baby.  (this is a joke that Kirk and I often relay to friends when they ask us when we're having a baby.  we always tell them- we have nowhere to put it!  and they say- oh, but you can move, and then we tell them, or we could just put it in a hammock and hang it from the ceiling!)

  • I haven't had the glucose test yet but I'm doing it in 4 weeks at my 28 week appointment.  I'm a little worried about failing too, but like everyone said, it's not at all uncommon to fail the 1 hr and pass the 3 hr.

I've always been borderline anemic too.  My prenatal does have iron in it, and I've been eating oranges like they're going out of style, but I've been SUPER tired lately.  My midwife also recommended iron supplements but said I'll still benefit if I take them every other day or every 2 days instead of every day (and shouldn't have the resulting constipation some iron supplements cause.)

Anyway, you're not alone in all these pregnancy adventures. :) Hope the next test (and everything else) goes smoothly for you!
