Stay with this job, or find another?

I realize the job market isn't all that great right now, but I'm trying to weigh my options and see what would be best.

My fiance and I are about 3 weeks away from closing on our house in his home town. He works in his, and I work in mine where we currently live. They are about an hour apart. My fiance has a career job that has constant promotions and raises with the government. I work as a bartender and make $1200ish base pay each month and anywhere from $15-$100 in tips each night depending on how busy it is.

My question is, should I commute the hour 5 days a week for this kind of pay, or should I find another waitress/bartender type job closer to our new home? I wouldn't quit my present job until I find something else. Do you think it's worth it?

If you don't like something, change it; if you can't change it, change the way you think about it.

Re: Stay with this job, or find another?

  • I don't think you have anything to lose by looking for a job closer to home while you continue the commute to your current job.

I think you are making the smart choice to continue working at your current job while you are trying to land another.

  • Ditto Sun and Rain exactly.  What have you got to lose, other than a serious commute?

  • Ditto on keeping the current job and commuting while searching. You'll be able to pocket the gas money difference quickly when you start the new job :)
  • I am in a similar position with moving to where my Fiance lives here in a few months after we get married. Its an hour commute through the mountains... that I am really not looking forward to for the winter! I love my job and it pays pretty well, too so its not something I want to give up, but I also have to weigh the options between a job that I could find there and the commute/time/risk.

Just like everyone else has said - it doesn't hurt to look around and see what is available or what you could find. Try not to burn any bridges along the way, but it is what is best for you and your fiance. Work to live, not live to work.

    Good luck and happy job-hunting!
