Need area recs for Cape Cod vacation

Hi ladies

We are visiting my husbands family this June and wanted to rent a house on or near the beach in Cape Cod. They reside in the Middleboro area so anything that is two hours or less from there would be great!  His family is not being overly helpful as far as what areas we should book or stay away from so any help from you ladies is much appreciated!

Why ask why, when you know you're going to get a smart-ass answer

Re: Need area recs for Cape Cod vacation

  • would you be more interested in a small town, local feel or a more busy, touristy place?  that will play a big part in my advice since I have experience with both aspects.

I love your kitty cat! So cute!  Our kids are only 3 and 4 so their attentions span is zero I think for a lot of the tourist stuff?  We were hoping for more small town feel....ideally just rent a house and spend most of the time on the beach?  Is the first week of June too cold still for that? My husband hasn't been "home" for any length of time for so long...he has forgotten everything!

  • Early June is basically hit or miss whether you'll be able to spend any significant time on the beach, but it won't necessarily be cold (well, the water will be freezing), but it may not be really warm either.

For a more small beach town feel, I highly recommend Dennis (not East Dennis, not Dennisport, not anything else with Dennis in the name, just Dennis (they're all different!)).  My parents have a house there and the town is very quaint and there are some great beaches.  If you look for houses in walking distance to the beach, look for houses near either Corporation Beach, Mayflower Beach, or Chapin Beach.

Because June is iffy beach weather, I also will suggest staying in Chatham (pronounced chat-um).  VERY cute town and there is a lot more non-beach stuff to do (lots of shops, etc).  I'm not has familiar with the beaches there so I don't have specific suggestions.

  • Ah Cape Cod- a place near and dear to my heart, I go every summer and LOVE IT! I always stay somewhere between the stretch of Dennis-Harwich-Chatham. Great public beaches, fun bars and restaurants (you need to have a lobster at Brax, and go to the improper bostonian!) and Dennis is actually a cute town, convinent to everything...and you can find an affordable cottage rental.

    HAVE FUN!

  • I completele agree with the others. My grandparents and  great-grandparents had houses in Dennis and I love it. Chatham is more trendy, yuppy, etc. Dennis is quaint, real Cape. Make sure you take your kids to Sundae School.

  • I'm gonna share with you a tiny little secret......there is beauty not over the bourne and sagamore bridges :)

Here's my secret....I grew up in Rochester (exit 3 off 495), went to high school in mattapoisett and marion ((we're a tri town (regional)school))...these two towns, along with fairhaven and wareham and onset are BEAUTIFUL and only a few exits away from middleboro....and...no bridge traffic :)

look at things like thewanderer.com for local rentals, you'll get cheap and beautiful rentals without all the crap of going over the bridges....onset is VERY touristy and fun :)

I miss that area every day :( So much fun :) This summer will be VERY hard being away from there :(

    Hope that helps :)

yep!  there are 3 locations - the original one is in Harwichport.  My husband grew up going to the Cape in the summers and they went to Sundae School all the time!
