My Poor Pup

Disclaimer: Sorry for any weak stomachs...

So our 2 year old dog Whiskey woke us up this morning throwing up. She has a weak stomach though she normally only has issues when she is riding in the car (we have to give her anti-nausea meds for all car trips even the quick trip to the vet) but in the past 3 months or so she has had a couple of these episodes and woken us up to the oh so lovely sound and smell of stomach acid. There was no undigested food in it (her last meal was approximately 12 hours before since this was about 6:30 am), just slightly pink stomach acid.

I've done a bit of googling about it and am on the border about calling the vet, because her energy level and appetite are normal, though she has had a couple of nights where she wasn't interested in dinner but she ate normally at breakfast. Nothing consistent symptoms wise.

I guess my question is, it this a common problem? Has anybody had this problem or something similar with their dog?

My instinct is that if it happens again within the week or if other symptoms show up to take her to the vet, but I'm wondering if I should take her sooner. I don't like my pups feeling sick :(

Re: My Poor Pup

  • I would call the vet and see what they say. Can't hurt.

I hope Whiskey starts to feel better soon! Its the worst when the pets are sick!

  • I agree with Montana.  Calling the vet won't cost anything.  That depends on the vet though, some vets are all about the $$ and will want you to come in even if it doesn't seem like a big deal.

Calling the vet will give you peace of mind.

  • Late last summer Oscar was throwing up I'd say on average about 4-5x's a week.  Similar to Whiskey (or at least how I read your post), it usually was just bile, although it occassionally had chunks of kibble in it. However, he was still eating breakfast and dinner like usual and his energy levels were the same as always

We went to the vet for an ear infection and mentioning the vomiting, our vet recommending switching food.  After we completed the switching process, he hasn't thrown up since.

However, obviously that's just one possibility. I'd recommend calling your vet to be safe!  Especially since (if I remember correctly) you have other dogs.  You'd hate for it to be somethign that's contagious and then have several sick pups!

    Hope Whiskey feels better!!

  • Jaz doesn't ever throw up, but she does have a "nervous stomach" except her issues are at the other end.  Which is OH so fun to come home to.

She's had these episodes a few times in her life and the vet always switches her to a soft prescription food for a few days, and after that she's always right back to normal.

So, if it were me, I'd maybe try a canned food that's made to be more easily digestible for a few days and if the vomiting keeps up or gets worse, then call the vet.
