Getting off of birth control

Hey ladies!

I've made the decision to get off of birth control. We're not trying to get pregnant, I just think it's time to let my body regulate itself (and I'm tired of some of the side effects). I've been on the pill for almost 6 years now and I'm a little nervous about how my body is going to adjust. Do any of you have stories or experience with this? Thank you!

Re: Getting off of birth control

  • Congrats on making this decision!!!  I have been off of BC since July.  I was on the NuvaRing and developed massive blood clots in my leg and lungs from it.  So going off wasn't really a choice at the time, but my DH and I had already decided to go off of BC started after the wedding.  My cycles have been super goofy since stopping.  I always tended to have normal cycles, around 28-29 days.  Since going off of BC I have had a 16, 24, 26, 29, 32, 31, and 32 day cycles.  We have really been making the extra effort to try to get pregnant since September - and not pregnant yet.  We tried to wing it for the first 5 cycles, and just guessed when it would be that ovulating.  The past month we started using the ovulation predictor sticks, and started recording my basal body temperature.  It is amazing how much that helped this month!  Fertilityfriend.com is the website that I use to record my BBT.  It might be a good idea to start getting used to taking your waking temp and charting everyday.  Also there is a book called Taking Charge of Your Fertility.  It helps alot with learning about your body and how to pin point ovulation.  I thought getting pregnant was going to be easy - stop BC, have sex, get pregnant.  But there is so much more too it.  Good Luck to you!!!!!  If you have any questions just let me know!

  • I just went off the pill in January, so I'm right there with you. ?We aren't going to try and get pregnant until April, so for now we're using condoms. ?It hasn't even been 28 days yet, so I have no idea how it's going :) ?But so far so good. ?I had some cramping about 2 weeks after going off (maybe I ovulated?), but nothing too bad. ?Good luck! ?Keep us (or me) updated on how it goes.

  • Thanks for the input! BC has been my crutch for so long, that it's just weird to think of life without it. But it is kind of liberating! Time to wake these ovaries up! haha

  • Funny, I just went off it a few months ago too for side effect reasons.  Been on it 10 years!  So far, no significant changes.  I have had some spotting between periods, but not much.  Cramps last month were a bit worse than on the pill, but that was normal for me before I went on it.  The only other thing that stinks is I'm really bad at tracking my cycle and I liked how regular it was before.  It is a bit more of a surprise now!  I need to start actually counting again...
  •  My body never liked BC and I frequently went on and off trying different types over the last 10 years.  About 2 years ago I was diagnosed with high blood pressure while on Seasonique.  They took me off BC and I've never felt better! My period has always been regular and the month I went off Seasonique I had a normal cycle.

  • I'm in the exact same boat as OP. we're not TTC yet but I went off my bc pills after 6 years on it. I'm also anxious to see how my body will adjust, this is my first cycle off so I'm sure it'll be wacky for a while.
