Thanking references

Last month, I had two interviews for a job.  This week, they've been contacting my references for phone conversations. What is the appropriate way to thank someone for acting as your reference?  Is it sufficient to write a handwritten thank you, or are small gifts appropriate?  If so, what are some good ideas?  None of my references live in my current area, so it would have to be something easily mailed.

Thanks,

Chelsea

Re: Thanking references

  • I've never even thanked mine with a note, so I think a small gift is overkill.

  • I think a gift is probably going too far - seems like bribery a little ;-)

A handwritten thank you note would be very nice. I generally am in touch with references via email throughout the process and just do an emailed thank you, but handwritten would be a good touch.

  • Gifts are a bit much.  I usually let me references know when I'm applying for a job just to give them a heads up.

A follow up thank you is enough.  Even if just to let them know if you got the job or not.

  • Offer to be a reference to them.

Get on LinkedIn and recommend them.

Give them a call and thank them.
