Dr. Bronner's Soap

The green living board looks dead - I lurked a bit but figured I'd post here first.

Do you use Dr. Bronner's soap? In what ways, and do you have any 'recipes' for your various uses?

Re: Dr. Bronner's Soap

  • Just in the shower. I dilute it in water and use it as body wash.

  • I use it to do dishes, clean the sink, clean the bathroom - I mix it with baking soda and use it as a scrub to get off all the grime.

  • The green living board goes through spurts. Usually, if you post a question, you'll get a decent amount of replies in a few days, especially this question.

I mix a little with baking soda like patty - use it on the porcelain tub, shower walls and sinks.

I make all purpose spray with half water, half vinegar and a squirt of Dr. Bronners.

We use it as dishwashing soap when we're camping.  I've used it as body wash and shampoo for camping, too, but it's a bit too drying for my skin.

I just read on Dr. Bronner's website that vinegar & Dr. Bronners is not good to mix - http://lisa.drbronner.com/?p=292

Oh, interesting.  Mine doesn't turn out like that, though.  I wonder if I use such a small amount that it doesn't react.  At any rate, I'll stop.  No point in wasting ingredients if it's not doing any good.  Thanks for the link.

I made the same mix and mine didn't react.  But you're right, no need to waste good stuff if it's not working!

I mix 1/2 Dr. B's and 1/2 water in a soap foamer as handsoap in the kitchen.  Since I got the unscented Dr. B's I put in a squirt of lavender Mrs. Meyer's soap to make it smell pretty.   :-)

I got this foamer.  It's amazing.  I like foam soap for hands.  And it's on sale!  Bummer - I paid $14!  CLICK HERE.

I use vinegar to clean just about anything.  It's an all purpose cleaner that really works, is cheap, and is non toxic.  The only downside is the stink.  P-U!

I want to tackle homemade laundry detergent but we have a Costco-sized bottle of Tide that I would hate to waste that we need to get through first.

My guess with the mixing of vinegar & Dr. B's is that it's such a small amoun that you can't tell it's reacting? It's not the vinegar that would curdle, it's the soap, and if you only used a drop of two, you will only have a drop or two of curdles? IDK

I love using vinegar to clean - but yeah - the smell drives me crazy. It's such a nasty smell to me..

Could be.  I just give mine a good shake before I use it and it appears to work just fine.

Has anyone found a great "green" shampoo?  I tried Burt's Bees but I just DON'T like it.  My hair likes chemicals I guess!!  :-/

my sister has been going through this process of never using shampoo again. it's fascinating!

here are some excepts from her FB posts:

"Today counts 2 weeks since I stopped using shampoo. I gotta say, baking soda and vinegar DO work to get it clean & conditioned! My hair is still a little greasy, since I am trying to train it to go a week between baking soda washes, & doing water only washes in between. Today I need another BS wash. I have noticed that Day 5 after BS this past week was much less greasy than Day 5 of the previous week. Encouraging"

"So yesterday I did a water wash and 50/50 vinegar/water mix, then put some jojoba and lemon oil on the ends. I think I finally got the right amount of oil. It helped with the static and I was able to wear it down to Erin's house. Today it's a little staticky again, so up in the ponytail it goes. I might have to be brave and try completely water only like Carol Doyle if it stays staticky."

"Today counts 3 weeks since I last used shampoo. Yay! And it is 5 days since I last used baking soda to 'wash' my hair. I have noticed that every 'day 5 hair' since I stopped has been getting progressively less greasy. Today my hair is oily, but it looks more like how my day 3 hair used to look when I used shampoo. It actually looks less oily than yesterday.. I don't know if I'll use baking soda today. We'll see.."

"Washed my hair today with some strong black tea in one bottle and ACV/water in another. No static! More defined waves and less frizz.. I'm thinking I need to cut back on the baking soda or elimiate it altogether. It was probably adding to my frizz and static problems. I'm a little more oily than I'd like to be, which might be solved by using less vinegar in my mixture. Yay!"

i can't imagine but i would LOVE to cut out shampoo and conditioner. she's brave.

Hmmm.  Yeah that is one movement I don't think I could do.  Much like cloth pads or not using deoderant.  Maybe those are all great once you get into the swings of things but I'm not ready to take the leap.  Baby steps for Jenny.  I can't stand having greasy hair.  My hair is really fine and when it gets even slightly greasy it gets stringy.

  • I use baking soda and apple cider vinegar too.  :)   I've been doing it for at least 6 months and I don't think I'll ever go back.  It has never been this soft and shiny in my life.  And the money I save....

I think the transition was easier for me than your sister, strength.  It took me a few weeks to get the right ratio and then I was good to go.  With regular shampoo I washed my hair every 2-3 days and now I'm at 5-6 days.  I've gone 8 days before, but by day 7, it was slightly greasy and I was kind of skeeved out at the thought of going that long without washing it.  I'm sure people think it's gross to even go a couple days but curly hair gets really dry if you wash it too often.
