The Good, Bad & Ugly!
I am looking to relocate to TX & Austin is on my list of places. I will be visiting this spring. Can you share with me the good, bad and ugly of living in Austin. Thanks!
Re: The Good, Bad & Ugly!
Good: Mild winters, lots of live music, places to eat, things to do.
Bad: The closer to downtown, the more expensive houses are; traffic, especially along I-35.
Ugly: July and August
I moved here in 2002 for college from a small town in east Texas - so in my experience Austin is the greatest thing since sliced bread... or electricity... or as keyless entry in your car... it's really really great.
Good: tons of outdoor activities, it's a very "green" city (as in there are lots of trees and not a concrete jungle..), there is a lake which is amazing in the summers. We love taking our dog to the off leash parks downtown and swimming with him, downtown is apparently a very "happnin'" place - but I don't go too often. There are farmers markets, local artists, and all sorts of other great stuff that happen downtown. The city is pretty "walkable" once you get into downtown. (Semi) affordable housing (depending on where you live now).
Bad: Traffic sucks during rush hour. But really, I think any large city would. There are not that many large highways to get you were you want to go... it's pretty much Mopac (loop one), I-35, 183 (Research), or 2222 to cross through. I don't work during regular traffic hours so I can get from the north to the south side of town in about 20 minutes. I even choose to live in South Austin and work in North Austin. However, if you're going to be a 9-5er... you'll probably want to live in the same area you work.
Ugly: ummmm... nothing ugly that I can think of. Austin is a beautiful place. Just come prepared for some heat in the summers.

ShanWalk actually summed it up pretty nicely.
I will add to the ugly though: Too many days with over 100 degree heat and high humidity make parts of the summer unbearable to be outside. And cedar! I never had allergies in my life until I moved to Austin, and I spend 2-3 months every year miserable due to pesky cedar. Other than those two complaints, I LOVE it here.

I agree completely with Chicklit's succinct list. I will only add a few of my own:
Good: Tex-Mex and barbecue, running around Town Lake, swimming holes in the summer, drinking margaritas any time of the year, going to the Alamo Drafthouse to see movies and eat dinner/drink wine, and in my experience, the people are nice and friendly here.
Bad: Not only does traffic suck, but it's generally crowded in Austin--at movies, restaurants, anything cool really. It can get annoying.
Ugly: Only the extreme heat in the summer, but I really think you get used to that (especially if you go swimming as often as you can). It does suck but the beautiful winters are worth it!
where do you currently live? and what is the best part of it?
Today has been beautiful, but a little on the cold side, but wow what a day to be out and about!
I love everyone's good.
Depending on where you're moving from, traffic isn't that bad. Compared to Dallas and Houston, traffic is fine here. At least you're moving! In Dallas I remember people bringing books to go to and from work because you'd sit in the same place for 45 minutes or more. Really, we'd put the parking brake on and just sit.
I currently live in Michigan.
Good: Fall and Summer. The beach. Watching the trees change witht he season. Very little traffic.
Bad: Racial issues.
Ugly: The winter is horrible. It is cold from November to March. It can snow 18 inches at a time and the temp can be below 0 for days at a time.
Well we have summer, and then cool/cold (not really fall) leaves don't change much. Beach is about a 5 hour drive!
There's not many racial issues in Austin. We're pretty easy going, and to each your own here, which I LOVE. No one seems to judge, and there's not much of a dress code.
The coldest it got this year was in the teens and that is RARE. It snowed a whole inch and school was cancelled. Beware the summers if you're from up north. 30+ days of temps over 100 are very normal. Summer is from April til about October.
