Poll: Going on Dr. Phil

My extended family has been having some major issues regarding the care of my grandmother (who by the way is no infirm, only old and needing either someone to live with her or be in an assisted living facility), which has caused a major split in the family.  One of my aunts (who is the underdog in the situation) sent in our story to Dr. Phil.  He emailed her inviting all of us onto the show.

I'm curious now, what other people think about this.

How would you feel if it was you and your family? Would you be all for having an unbiased 3rd party step in and help problem solve? Would you hate to have all your problems aired on national television? Would you be thrilled for any chance to be on T.V.

Discuss away!

Re: Poll: Going on Dr. Phil

  • I wouldn't want to go on a show and air my problems, Dr Phil or no. Don't love or hate him, just not my style.

BUT if it was the only way to get the family to come to a decision then maybe I would. I'd try to go to a regular family therapist first though (off TV).

  • I'm not really a fan of going on national television to broadcast my problems. I agree with Mystery, can you try a regular family therapist first?

  • Special snowflake here. I wouldn't mind a personal family session with the Good Doctor, but I don't like the idea of going outside the family like that, airing dirty laundry in public.

Bringing in outside help is great; putting on a 3-ring-circus for America is not.*

*I am a total hypocrite, because I love watching families put on a 3-ring-circus for America!

  • Yea - I'm totally and completely against the idea, and since the majority of the family feels that way as well, unfortunately you aren't going to be seeing our family air our dirty laundry for America. So sorry about that for you all. lol

But I was shocked by how many in my family actually thought it was a great idea! I mean, I really do believe that the show is a farce.   Now, my opinion of  people in my family, who I once thought highly of, has dropped to all time low  knowing now that they think this would be a good thing for our family.  Crazy fools.

My aunt who contacted the show also tried selling the idea by telling them that if they decided not to do the show it was proving that she was right, and they knew they would get blasted going on the show. If they had nothing to hide they would go on the show.  Yeah way to sell you're idea!

And my aunts  would get blasted, but so would my aunt who sent in the problem. And so would my Grandma. And the whole thing would absolutely kill my grandma. Absolutely kill her, and yet even though I know in my heart she would hate the idea of putting our problems on national TV like that (she's from the area that you didn't even want people to know you were pregnant, even if you were so far along everyone knew, you would never ever talk about it), she has said she wants to go (according to the aunt to is living with her and who came up with the idea).

i do really hope our family can get some counseling and have our problems resolved and relationships healed, but to go on national television to do it would only make the problems worse, not better

  • I am not a fan of his. I think a mediator would be a great thing, but you don't need to do it on TV.
  • I wouldn't go for the pure fact that what is an issue in your family is going to get blown WAY out of proportion. I have a friend who was on Dr. Phil with her mom about over protective mothers. They have a fantastic relationship and I think went on the show more on a whim because somehow someone asked them to. Well they ended up making her mom look like a freak and my friend like a total pushover. The show is not there to solve problems, it's there to get ratings.
