At what point to you go to the doctor?

Hey, just curious at what point you all go to the doctor with cold/flu symptoms.

I always seem to go when I don't need to or when things get REALLY bad and I end up diagnosed with several "____ituses" and a huge dose of antibiotics.

Re: At what point to you go to the doctor?

  • I go to the doctor if I have a fever that lasts longer than 24 hours or if I have a cold/flu that lasts longer than 5 days.  Viruses take 5 to 7 days to run their course and they can't give you anything for a virus so that's why I wait so long.

    Are you sick Millie?

  • Yeah... dumb flu going on here.  It made me curious... since I never seem to go when I should, what do other people do?  We just had an insurance change in January and it's not as good now so I know I'm going to be leaning more to my waiting too long tendencies now.  Stick out tongue
  • Can I just say how much I hate our health care system?  It's so sad that we (Americans) think twice about going to the doctor because of our insurance.

    **Hopping off my soap box**

For the flu, I usually just take tons of vitamins, drink lots of water and try to get at least 8 hours of sleep at night.  I hope you feel better soon!!

That's my method too.  Thanks for the well wishes!

  • Last week I got in a phone altercation with my insurance company about my birth control pills and me skipping my period and them saying it was too soon and I would have to wait 4 days to pick them up....  I don't think THEY should have control over WHEN I have my period.  Give me my damn pills before I rip your head off....

    *rant over*

Sorry you're sick Michelle!  Rest, lots of rest helps.  Hot tea with lemon and honey, and if you are that miserable go to the doctor and get antibiotics.  And don't let them give you crap how it's a long winter and to only take them if you really need to....just take them and feel better.

    You are too funny.  Smile

  • I don't mess around with illness, particularly my dad and I both, on separate occassions, tried to fight through our symptoms and ended up with pneumonia... I was hospitalized for a week and he died from lack of oxygen to the brain. For me, I have good insurance that we pay quite a bit for out of DHs paycheck, so why not use it? I can understand wanting to put it off because of the cost, but if it's more than a few days and you really feel crummy, don't risk it. I beg of you.

Oh, I am so sorry... Sad  Thank you for the wisdom.

  • I agree with Nicole - fever (and not 99 degrees.  like 100+) for more than a day or two is usually my tipping point.  That being said, the *only* time I've been to the doc in the last 5 years other than for annual exams was for a sinus infection and I just went to minute clinic.  That was MUCH cheaper for me to do than to see my regular physician (sad, but true).  Might be an option for you to consider!
  • I go when the illness sets off my asthma symptoms.  And even then, I won't accept antibiotics, just steroids.
  • I guess I'm not the one to ask because I don't even have a "regular" doctor.  It would take at least a week of sickness with no sign of improvement before I went to the doctor.
