Dishwasher question

So I haven't owned a dishwasher in about seven years. Now we have one (though it's ancient). I can't remember what's OK to put in it and what I shouldn't. Obviously, most plates, cups and glasses are going to be OK, but what things with plastic will melt? Are the plastic handles on my pots OK? Tupperware?

I wouldn't put in any plastics that aren't specifically labeled with a dishwasher safe symbol. I also never put pots and pans in the dishwasher.

Yep, I only do heavy duty plastics, not flimsy reusable containers after a few unfortunate incidents. Smaller plastic bowls or lids need to go in the top rack like MBB said.

Anything plastic goes on top. I usually don't put tupperware covers in the dishwasher because they've warped in the past. I also don't put my good frying pans, good knives or nice barware in the dishwasher - I wash all that stuff by hand.
