Since we're slow

I'm going to talk about my race training!

So, I'm almost done with the first week, and things are going alright.  I'm tired.  I headed toward bed at 9:30 last night, which is about an hour and a half earlier than normal.  And, as I mentioned before, my calves are sore, which is weird for me.

I sent my heart rate monitor off to get a new battery and whatnot, and I got it back last night.  I'm kind of  a dork, and now I am excited to work out so I can see if it works better now.

The other day I decided I needed new running songs, so I downloaded....(wait for it).....Ke$ha.  Yeah, I know.  Shameful.  But her songs are fun enough to get me moving, so whatever.

And I think I need to remember more often to put on sunblock before I run, because I'm starting to get a tiny tan, and I don't want that.

Oh, and I have been eating everything.  Not good.

Okay, I think that about covers it.  Thanks for reading.

Re: Since we're slow

  • What does your training schedule look like?

I am always ravenous when I get in vigorous workout routines. You need the fuel though!

BTW, re: your post about yogurt...me too.

  • The training schedule....this is going to be a long response.

All of the trainings schedules I've seen are designed to work around a M-F, 9-5 work schedule, which I do not have.  I don't even have a schedule where I have the same days off every week.  So, I have to futz with the schedule, no matter what I do.

The one I'm doing now is meant for a non-runner, which isn't exactly true for me, but I'm not a strong runner either, so for now, it's fine.  I don't have to start seriously training until late March, so for now, I'm following the non-runner plan, building up a good base.  In April, I may switch over to a more intense plan, but we'll see.

Here's what this week's schedule looks like, just to give you an idea:

    Sunday: 30 min run/walk

    Monday: rest

    Tuesday: 35 min run/walk

    Wednesday: 40 min run/walk

Thursday: cross train (I do weights)

Friday: I think it's rest (either that or Thursday is rest and Friday is xtrain)

    Saturday: 45 min run/walk

Because of my work schedule, this only kind of works.  I worked 13 hours on Sunday, so I didn't work out at all.  Monday I xtrained, and then I did run Tues and Weds.  Saturday I'm working at 12:30, so I could run, but I don't want to do the longest run of the week on a day that I have to go to work, so I'm thinking about moving it to Sunday.  And besides, I don't like the idea that I have to do a long run, and another run the next day.  And I don't have a good track record of working out on Friday evening, so I have to plan for that.  I don't want to run tonight, so I may xtrain, force myself to run Friday, rest Saturday, and then do the long run Sunday.

Is that confusing enough for you?

  • GREAT job so far!

I am not surprised you're eating everything. When you up your training, your body needs it.

I totally hear you on the HR monitor. I'm a dork like that also!

If you want some other dance music (although some is more like house/techno remixes) I have some good ones I can recommend.

  • What distance is your race?

Your training schedule looks really good. What type of running shoes are you wearing?

I always go to bed early when in heavy training, it really wipes me out.

Keep up the good work! you may want to buy a hat to wear to cover your face from the sun. I rarely ever run with out a hat.

  • Okay, answering questions:

Music -- this is super dorky, but I normally run to broadway show tunes.  Ke$ha was a change, and it's fun for a while.

I do wear a hat.  Even when I run at night.  It both shades my face and keeps my hair out of the way.

Right now I'm wearing these shoes:

They are Pumas, and it surprised me that I like them as much as I do.  Usually I wear Brooks, but I tried these on because they are pink, and I ended up liking them a ton.  They are nice and wide, which I prefer.  And my last pair of Brooks made me unhappy.

The next thing I'm going to have to figure out is a hydration belt.  I hate having things attached to me, so this will be interesting.  I know I can get a bottle that has a handstrap, but I already hold my ipod in one hand, so I would rather not fill both hands.  But, I have a little while to figure it out.

Oh, and it's a half marathon.  Just crazy enough, but not so crazy that I'm scared.

I just gave in and got a hydration belt last summer, and ended up really liking it. As long as it sat on my hips snug and didn't bounce. I found that I ran longer when I had hydration as an option. Funny, before things got super hot I ran a STRONG 10 miler last summer. That was my last actual real run, once the weather got extreme, I got lazy and just stopped runnign. So ashamed of myself for that.

Overall I'm happy I bought the belt.

  • Don't feel too ashamed, H loves Ke$ha (or however the heck you spell it) too.  It's quite comical to hear him sing along actually.

Good job on the training!  I'm not sure if I missed it, when is your race?
