what are your favorite munchies at a party??

DH is throwing a simple gathering tomorrow to drink up the two cases of his first homebrew.

DH was just going to pick up jars of salsa and cheese dip, but I won't let that happen since some wives (i.e. my friends ;) will be there too.   I'm way to much of a foodie to let that fly :D

This is a very simple party, doesn't start till 8, so we're not feeding everyone dinner.  But what are some of your favorite dips, finger foods and little one bite dessert options??

(It's an IPA, so the bolder or spicier the food, the better.  Desserts, anything goes.  I was thinking of course of some good spicy cheesy dip, but any specific recipes would be appreciated!)

Re: what are your favorite munchies at a party??

  • I don't know if this is fancy enough for a foodie like you but my pizza dip is always a big hit:

8 oz cream cheese, 2 cups mozz. cheese, 3/4 cup light mayo, 2 chopped tomatoes (or 1 can chopped tomatoes-easier!), about 1/2 cup chopped black olives, about 1/2-1 cup pepperoni  Mix all of these together put in an 8x8 dish and bake at 350 for 30 min.  I serve it with french bread.

  • Cheese and nice bread is always a hit.  You can likely find some spicy cheese at a specialty cheese shop.

  • that sounds awesome!

I don't want to get too crazy, something like that sounds perfect.

I'm thinking something better than just opening a jar of kraft queso dip, but not as far as like Tyler Florence's lobster-artichoke-truffle on homemade barley cracker with aged balsamic reduction... I don't have that much time ;)

  • Chips and queso are always the most popular at any party we throw / go to.  I never make it, because we have several friends with really great recipes, so sorry I don't have any suggestions on that front.

    This is always really popular:

    Corn Dip (serve with Fritos)
15 oz can white corn - drain
15 oz can yellow corn - drain
    10 oz can Rotel
    8 oz cream cheese, softened
    1/2 tsp chili powder
    1/2 tsp garlic powder
    chopped fresh cilantro
Mix together & bake at 350 for 30 minutes

A friend of mine also makes buffalo chicken dip and serves with chips or celery - it's really, really good!

A really great dessert (if you have the time and patience, which I do not):

    Stuffed Strawberries:
    block of cream cheese
    1/2 cup confectioner's sugar
    1 tsp vanilla
Mix together, cut off top of berries (and a bit on the bottom so they will stand up) and pipe the mixture into the top of the berries.

Last one - Fritos Scoops Dip:
Spread 8 oz cream cheese in pie dish
    1/2 cup salsa on top
    1/2 cup red onion
1/2 cup each - green & red bell pepper
    1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese
(I like to also add jalapenos)
Bake at 350 for 20 minutes

    Good luck!!!

  • It's super simple, but if there's a veggie plate (with Hidden Valley ranch dip) and a plate of fruit, I will plant myself in front of them ignore all other options.  Then I don't feel like crap about myself for the rest of the night.
  • At our parties we usually have veggie and hummus. Also DH will cook specialty sausage on the grill and cut it in to small rounds as an appetizer. It always disappears even when we have dinner items. He like most guys is really in to meats.
  • Hummus!! yes!  Hadn't crossed my mind yet - thanks!

    A veggie tray is a must :)

Thanks for all the recipes too!!

  • Tortellini Caprese Skewers
    1 pkg. cheese tortellini
    1 tub sundried tomato pesto
    1 T balsamic vinegar
    8 oz fresh mozzarella
8 oz cherry or grape tomatoes
    Skewers

Cook tortellini according to package directions.  Stir balsamic vinegar into pesto.  Cut mozzarella into pieces (or make it easy on yourself and buy mozzarella pearls).  Toss tortellini, pesto, mozz, and tomatoes together in a bowl and marinate for at least 3 hours (can be made a day ahead).  Thread onto a skewer, alternating tortellini, mozzarella, and tomatoes. Garnish a platter with lettuce leaves and arrange on top of leaves.

For dessert, if you want to do something simple and don't want to cook anything, I'd go for bite sized cheesecake or bite sized cream puffs, both of which can be found in the freezer section of your grocery store.
