whew. thank you all SO much for your kind words and vibes.
good news is that the pup made it through the night. she still seems to be in a lot of pain according to the vet, but they are keeping her comfortable with pain medicine. unfortunately, no one has shown up to claim her as of yet. BUT, because she's still pretty unstable, they are going to hold off on submitting her to Animal Control until Monday (hopefully).
based on her teeth, they think she's about a year old and she's a Chow mix. because she's kinda skinny, they believe that while she is a house pet, she has probably been missing for at least a week.
I took the day off today, so the current plan of action is to go around to local businesses and see if anyone has put up a flier for her. the vet clinic is going to take a picture of her for me to take door to door in the area where she was hit in the hopes that someone recognizes her.
ugh, I hate this. I feel so guilty and just keep thinking of how devastated I would be if she were my dog. I mean, I AM devastated and she's not even my animal. I honestly wish I would have hit a person instead... because at least they wouldn't be refused treatment.
I don't know what else to do, minus begging on Facebook for someone to take her. any suggestions?
Re: doggie update
Oh Mandee, I love your compassion.
I'm glad the pup made it through the night, and I realllllly hope you can find the owner.
Other than what you've suggested for trying to find her, maybe check the classified section of the paper, and Craigslist, etc to see if anyone has put up a missing dog notice. And contact any shelters (if you haven't) to see if anyone has reported the dog missing.
Poor thing.
We'll just not tell H about this little fact, m'kay?
I think those suggestions from Raynes, as well as what you're headed out to do are about all you could do, short of taking the dog yourself. I'm sure the kitties would looove that. You never know if someone on facebook might see a picture and melt. It's worth a shot at least.
I love that you're such an animal lover and looking after this dog. Many vibes go out to the pup finding a good home soon, or that the owners are found, yelled at for a bit, and then given their long lost dog back.
Everything Raynes said. Definitely post on Craigslist. Even though I do not have a pet missing, I always look in case I see somene else's pet.
I will continue to send vibes and pray that the poor doggy's owner comes forth or you find them.
Another place to check is Fidofinder.com. I've seen it printed on lost dog flyers in the past--maybe the owners have listed the pup there. It's a long shot, but worth a quick search.
And please don't feel guilty; it happens so suddenly that you don't even have time to react. You're doing as much as you can for the dog--like raynes said, your compassion is wonderful.
Mandee, I already thought you were awesome, but this just increases your awesome-ness.
I agree with the previous suggestions. Only thing I would add is to post the picture on Facebook and ask everyone in your area to forward. A friend's dog wandered off (he's blind) and it was found by a loving person (like you). Several days later someone from Facebook recognized him and he was returned home safely.
I missed the earlier post, so sorry this happened Mandee. Dont blame yourself. You are an incredibly loving person and that dog was lucky it wasnt someone else less caring. I agree with the other ladies. Facebook as much as possible and Craigslist, along with what you already planned.
Best of luck dear! Ill keep the pup in my thoughts.

I already posted on your FB on maybe where to find a rescue/no kill shelter that will take the animal...
... but for the owner. I'd contact all the local vet offices, let them know ABC vet is treating/holding a chow mix with no collar if any owner calls looking they'll know where the dog is. Also, I'd definitely post a pic of the dog on FB and ask all your friends to share the photo.... I saw an article that a dog was reunited with its owner after 3 years because some had posted the dogs pic on FB.
Also, I know one our local shelters (MLAR) always puts out an APB when a dog is reported missing. Just another idea.

Two other quick suggestions:
1) Post on PetFinder.com
2) See if the gals over on the Pets board have any other suggestions. A number of them work at animal rescues and may have other ideas.
thank you everyone for your continued vibes and advice!
I didn't make it out of the house today because I had some repairman here to fix our furnace. but I did place ads on both Craigslist and Pet Finder. the ad on PF needs to be approved before it's posted, so that might take up to 48 hours.
I've also sent emails to most of the local shelters, including the ASPCA, attached with her picture to see if anyone has reported her missing. I live in a pretty small county, so anyone who was looking for her would probably show up at the vet she's being held at.
in the meantime, I want her to be cared for and treated for her injuries. so I set up a donation page at chipin.com (thank you, sreihing!!!). all that info is here at this link:

I really hope this works. I mean, I wish there was an owner to step up, but if there's not, I at least want her to be cared for, and then hopefully I can find her a home. =/
