Random Question: Will you find out?

One of DH's friends (wife) is pregnant - due in August. We were talking (me, DH and the husband) a few weeks ago and he was saying how at their next appointment they'll find out the sex of the baby. Chris and I have said from the beginning that we don't want to find out, we want to be surprised - and our friend just thought that was craziness!

Yes, it's nice to know what you're having so you can decorate/buy things accordingly but what's wrong with going neutral? We've already talked about nursery colors (probably brown and green) and I KNOW that if I have a girl I DO NOT want pink everywhere. Drives me nuts. Plus, this is one of the only real surprises in life anymore....at least I think so anyway.

So, here's my question....will you find out the sex of your baby? Why or why not?

Re: Random Question: Will you find out?

  • We will probably find out. I went to a few baby showers where the couple did not find out, and every single item they received was green.  But the showers where we knew the gender of the baby had multiple colors- my cousin was expecting a girl, and she got some pink, some purple, and all the other pastel colors basically.  My cousin expecting a boy received blue, and green, and red, etc.  Plus knowing if it was a boy or girl would be exciting and I don't think I could wait the 9 months to find out!

Another cousin, did decide to find out for both of her pregnancies, but decided to keep their top name choices secret. Then they chose the name after having the baby and announced it then.  The said it was nice because then they couldn't be talked out of their favorite names. (Franklin (boy), and Kennedy (girl).

  • I have a feeling we will find out.  I am not sure we've talked about this.  It'll be a fun conversation.

No matter what, I do not want to share the names we have chosen!  I do not want input and opinions from family members.

As for the clothes colors, just register for a bunch of more neutrally ones if you don't want to share.  Not everything has to be green.  I love yellow kids clothes too!

  • We have talked about it a little, but we still don't know!  It would be fun and hard to anticipate such a big surprise!  In some ways, I am like Court. I love being able to plan ahead- I love that feeling of being satisfying-ly ready.  That part of me wants to find out.  I would get to start putting things together for a tiny little man or little baby girl.

However, when I was younger, I always thought that I would wait to find out.  I mean, it's kind of a recent thing that people can even find out the sex.  Everyone before them who couldn't survived til they found out ;)

I have 3 friends who have had babies in the last couple of months. They all found out before the birth, and they were all boys.  One friend who is currently pregnant will find out soon what she is having. BUT I do have one friend who is due in August who is waiting to find out!

  • When it comes time I want to find out and my DH doesn't. He says I can find out but that i have to keep it a secret from him (that won't work very well when I start shopping and bringing home everything Pink or Blue) His other suggestion is that neither of us find out, plan the baby shower and registry as if it's a girl and if it comes out a boy, he'll go and exchange everything while I'm in the hospital... HE"S NUTS!!! *** DH already has 2 boys and 1 girl. He wants a girl to even things out. Dh's youngest was 2 months old when we got together so it's like I already have a boy, and would also love a girl to even things out ****

His cousin and wife just had a baby Dec 23, and they didn't find out. They got a lot of yellow and green (I really don't like those colors) but not even a lot of clothes b/c it seemed like people didn't like not knowing. they said after Adalynne was born, they got a lot of gifts in the mail of Pink clothes...

Another suggestion that has been tossed around is to not find out at the sonogram but have the DR write it on a piece of paper and put it in a sealed envelope. then give it to the person that is throwing your shower, they can plan the shower pink or blue then and when you walk into the shower you get to find out.

I also saw on TV that with the Duggar's oldest son (Josh & his wife Anna) they were on the today show (but it could work if you want to tell everyone at once) that they had a cake baked and the cake color was either pink or blue. They cut into the cake and saw it was pink so they knew it was going to be a girl...

  • We are definitely going to find out.  I am way too impatient to wait another 6.5 months!  I will need to mentally prepare myself for another boy in the house if that is the case lol.

  • I never really thought about this seriously until now.  I always figured I would wait, but now that I think about it, I do not think DH is going to be able to wait.  If DH knows then I am going to want to know.

I am very much a planner also, so I would probably find out before and keep the names a secret.

  • I'm a big time planner too, so I think waiting will be hard for me. But I think I'll be able to do it - I mean, the only things gender-wise that people feel the need to plan is color/theme. Which, we're doing in neutral colors no matter what so that won't really matter.

We'll see. When the time comes, we could be signing a whole different tune!

  • I waited for all three, I like surprises.

Now you can buy so many baby things that can be for a boy or girl to start preparing.  I always knew what I was having though, I don't know if they were just lucky guesses, or mothers intuition.

  • DH and I haven't ever really talked about this. We both have some names and things we like, but haven't ever really discussed finding out the gender.

I have always thought I would want it to be a surprise. I wonder if once I'm pregnant and far enough along they can tell if I can handle not knowing!!

  • I'm not sure....

I really really really really want to have a girl. I do not really have any desire to have a boy. I know that sounds really messed up, but it's true. My whole life my cousins all had baby girls, so that's all I was around.

Now that I'm older there are some little boys in the family, but I'm not around them...I don't know anything about little boys! I didn't have siblings either...

And if I were one of those moms who had three boys, never got a girl and gave up, I would be very very unhappy..

I want one of each and to done after two.

So I don't know if I'd find out or not because I'm afraid I'd be disappointed if it wasn't a girl.

But I honestly think that when this actually happens someday I will just be very glad too have a healthy happy baby, not matter the sex.

I know I'm sort of a jerk but I can't help it. Clearly I'm not quite ready for babies hahaha.

Be careful with this mentality. I work with a lady who really really wanted girl and ended up having a boy. She was super disappointed and you can totally tell. It's like the poor kid wouldn't win from the second he was born.

  • We went back and forth on this issue for awhile, but in the end decided to find out.  The main reason I wanted to find out had nothing to do with shopping for things or certain colors, but I really wanted to name this child as soon as I could because I just felt that, for me, I would feel closer to him.  I'm not saying that you can't feel close to your baby or connect without knowing at all, I just personally wanted to already think about what he would be like (if I'm making any sense at all).

On the other hand, we almost did stay "team green" because I think it would be exciting to find out on the day of my child's birth and we would love this baby no matter what the sex.

  • We will definitely find out!  I asked DH what he thought about this and he said absolutely!  I don't think either one of us could wait.  Plus I work in radiology right next to the ultrasound dept. and there would just be way too much temptation to sneak over there and find out, and I wouldn't want to find out without DH there.  I would also want to know because I think I would feel more connected to the baby knowing if it is a boy or girl, and would want to decorate the nursery accordingly.
  • To keep it short and sweet, I want to find out, DH doesn't.

  • I had to find out. I had thought it was a girl. I'm glad I found out it was a boy. It gave me time to prepare myself and allow time to adjust to having a boy. I really really wanted a girl. The u/s tech even noticed my disappointment.

I'd say if you think you might have a disappointment with the sex the go ahead and find out. But if not then there's no problem with waiting.

  • Lauren I am with you.  I don't want to find out what the sex is, and everyone I tell that to thinks I am crazy.  I finally convinced DH to agree with me too.  One of my friends is pg right now so we were browsing babies r us and found a lot of really cute gender neutral baby bedding so I don't think it will be a problem, and like you said the nursery is the biggest thing.  We too love the brown and green "theme."  As far a clothes I will most likely register for the basics, onsies and such.  My friend who didn't find out said it was so much better and all of the nurses and doctors were coming in to see them b/c they were excited that they didn't know since just about everyone finds out now a days.  I am not a fan of all blue for a  boy and all pink for a girl.  I also know that once the baby comes out everyone will buy clothes for whatever gender it is and I will get to do some of the shopping too which will be fun.

  • Hubs and I actually had this discussion a few weeks ago. We were talking about how a friend of mine from work just found out she was pregnant and couldnt wait to find out the sex. Thats when Hubs said he wanted it to be a suprise for us. I was a little taken aback since I always thought I'd find out, but now it looks like when the time comes we will be waiting.

  • We aren't sure yet. It comes down to wheter we will have a house (with a nursery to decorate) or will still be in an apartment. There is also so little gender neutral stuff out there now-a-days, it'd be hard for anyone to get us clothes for the baby!
