Toddler Bed Help

Aiden got a new toddler bed for his birthday. He falls asleep in it fine but he wakes up in the middle of the night wanting to watch a movie and read a book. He doesn't want us to leave his room when he wakes up but doesn't want to come in bed with us. Even if he did let us leave him in his room, I wouldn't want to go back to sleep while he was still awake. The lack of sleep that this is creating is really starting to get to me! Anyone else go through this?

I love my crazy child!

Re: Toddler Bed Help

  • I haven't had to deal with this yet but a friend of mine in my mom group has a child about Aiden's age.  She said that she has his room baby proofed and then she put up a baby gate at the door.  She said that way her kid can't get out and after a few nights of crying at the gate, he eventually gave up and started sleeping in his bed.

I have no idea if this is a good approach or not, but maybe you can give that a shot?

  • I think Kathy's suggestion is the way to go.  I know it's hard, but if you have babyproofed he can't come to any harm.  He just needs to learn to sooth himself back to sleep.  I promise you will both get through this!
  • We had this problem with bubbie at first. and on occasion he will wake up upset in the middle of the night. What we do now is turn his tv on but put the volume to 1 or 2 and normally within a few minutes he is back to sleep and I go back in and turn it off then he's good until the morning.
  • LOL at the idea of me giving advice on this one.

    So, FWIW, you've got company.

ETA: Is that supposed to be me doing yoga in my avatar? Becuase that's even more hilarious than me giving sleep advice.

    Oh wait, I am too!

  • Yet another reason my almost 3 year old is still in his crib.  I'm so fearful of the toddler bed thing!

And now my avatar has changed and I'm white with blonde hair but my H looks tan. I don't know what's going on anymore!

  • if his room is babyproofed, dont worry about it.  He will go back to sleep fairly quickly.

  • I am late to the party but I second the baby gate idea.  We put P in his bed when was about 21 months old.  I have toddler proofed the room and we have a gate at the door.  He often cries at the gate.  Many times he falls asleep on the floor and we just move him when we go to bed.
