Is it safe to store these things in crawl space...

Hi, ladies! I am looking for input and realized this is a great board to come over and ask. I have a home with very little closet space (not even a coat closet). I have things that I use and love (mostly kitchen or entertaining), but that aren't used on a daily basis. I am trying to re-organize and make room as we are expecting baby 2 and space is a premium. Reading what some other women keep in garage/attic, made me re-visit the idea of the crawl space since I am trying to let go of my Type A personality a bit and consider changing my normal organization.

If these items could be kept in the crawl space on shelves so they would be accessible, but out of the daily living space, it would make a big difference. If it makes a difference: the crawl is under our living room/kitchen and is vented into the house, but the former owner destroyed the insulation on the exterior cement walls before moving out and did not replace it. Can you let me know if these things are safe to store in the crawl without damaging them?

* Pampered Chef (plastic servers with the chill bottoms, appetizer plates & metal holder, serving bowls (ceramic?) with metal holders, etc.

* Glass bowls, platters, table stuff (like parmesan cheese shaker, sugar shaker)

* Turkey platter, gravy boats, etc. (traditional - thick, white - ceramic?)

* Good Crystal - serving bowls, serving platters, butter dishes, etc.

* Popcorn maker

* Chocolate/cheese fountains

* crockpot

* plastic cake topper, tupperware

* dip bowls and chip platters (ceramic?)

My general rule of thumb is to not put anything porus in my attic or crawlspace. I don't want them to warp, melt, or pick up any unpleasant odor. I have stored glass, china, and ceramic items in a basement and attic though with no problems.

I am not sure where you are located. In New England, we do not store crystal and china and ceramic in the crawl spaces because the crawl spaces gets so cold that the items will crack or shatter. I do have plastics and wooden pieces tucked away in there.

thanks, ladies. I am in the Chicago area. It is cement crawl so it is kind of like a short basement

I think I am going to get a thermometer and keep track of the temp in there over a couple weeks and see how it goes. Until then, I guess I will stash it all in some big rubbermaid containers stacked in the corner...

Just lurking and noticed this post. I think you have a crawl space very similar to mine and it's the same temperature as the rest of the house. Ours is also under our living room and kitchen. I store pretty much anything in there that I would store in a normal basement including many of the things you stated. If yours is like mine I am sure it would be fine. Our crawl space even has a furnace vent in it to keep it warm like the rest of the house because being under the living room if it wasn't heated the cold air would just come through the floors to the living areas.
