need mattress recs...

I have had the same mattress for almost 11 years.  The springs are worn, you can see how it sags in spots even though I have always rotated it on a regular basis.  Drew and I promised ourselves that we would get a new one with our tax refund because I walk around hardly able to move every morning and he can't sleep in it at all because I must sleep in the middle where it is the most even.

What we have now is a pillow top, and it has been a really good comfortable mattress up until a couple of years ago, but it's time.  I've been doing research for a couple of months now, but wanted opinions from people I trust.  I was thinking about just putting it off for another year, but jeez louise, I just can't do it.  My back hurts too much, and to be honest it's just going to keep getting worse.

Please share your mattress recs....  I am SO baffled about it all.

Re: need mattress recs...

  • I'll look when I get home. I really like it. It one of those where if I move George can't feel me move (well not much) and vica versa. I seem to get better sleep on it. I'll let you know when I get home later

  • We are having the same problem. Our matress is 10 years old. It used to be comfortable, but now it's terrible. it's also a pillow top. I'm interested in what other have to say b/c I have no idea where to start.

ALSO, why is it that when you buy a king sized bed you need 3 pieces to your matress set rather than two? I've never owned a king, so I'm lost.

  • We bought a plaza serta mattress right before we got married, and we really like it. It was quite expensive though, but we wanted to spend to get top quality bc they say you spend half of your life in bed :)  BUT, we wont be spending near that much when we do buy another one.  It was very stupid of us.

Are you a member of Sam's club or Costco?  Their prices are really great and they have a good selection.

When we do buy another mattress, I dont think I would get a pillowtop again (so I could flip it over).  And, I wont be buying a new box spring, bc it's just wood LOL.  Also, check your bedframe depth too (if you plan on getting a new boxspring) you might want to get a low profile boxspring so the mattress wont be so high up.

Oh, and when you go to test out mattresses, lay on it like you sleep at home.  DH and I both are tummy sleepers, so we needed something firm.

    GL!

  • Yeah... I'm a tummy sleeper too.  Been trying to learn to sleep on my side, but even with a million pillows propped around me I always end up on my stomach.  I was full term with Chase still sleeping the wrong way.  Hard habit to break.

We have a sam's membership, and I have checked those out in the past.  We don't need new box springs.

Tiff...  the box springs for a king come in 2 pieces... like 2 twins.  Then the mattress makes 3 pieces.  I have no idea why =/

  • Tiff - you need two twin box springs because most houses you wouldnt be able to get the box spring up the stairs or through the doors.

I will never get a pillow top again because you can't flip it and that makes a difference to me.

Next time I think we will get a memory foam. I know several people with them and rave about them.

  • Mel-we have a platform bed with no box spring and our mattress still had to be hoisted through the windows upstairs! Dang that narrow/steep staircase!!!!

We have a foam mattress. NOT a tempurpedic. We decided against that one because I am a pretty restless sleeper and it takes a few minutes to 'compress' around you and give you support, so unless you stay still while you're sleeping it will constantly alternate between too firm and just right. Hope that made sense.....

After having a foam mattress I notice springs SO MUCH! It is amazing the difference! Our guest room has our 'old' spring queen mattress but it is a dual pillow top (not super fluffy) so there is enough cush that you don't feel the springs but you can flip it. That one is a Sealy. I don't remember the brand of the foam one but can look it up for you tomorrow.
