Cat fur and cleaning: furniture, hardwood floors, etc - HELP!

We are buying a beautiful old house this summer with hardwood floors throughout except tile in kitchen/bath. The floors are being refinished before we move in.

We have 2 indoor cats that shed like crazy. We're renting right now and I've been lazy about keeping up with the fur, but it's starting to make me insane.

With baby #2 coming around the time we move, and this being our 'forever' house, I am determined to keep up with the cat fur on a daily/regular basis rather than trying to play catch-up.

  • We are willing to spend the $$$ on a great vacuum (I'm thinking Rainbow?) if it's worth it. I hear mixed reviews on Dyson. We need something that will work on hardwood, tiles, and throw rugs.
  • Do you use anything else besides a vacuum for daily cleaning --- my mom always used a dustmop on her wood floors. Swiffer product? Microfiber dry mop? Other recs?
  • What product do you use to regularly clean/de-fur your furniture? We are getting a nice leather couch from DH's uncle which should be fairly easy to get the fur off (but with what?) but we have some upholstered chairs.
  • Any other advice? I should have figured out how to deal with this after living with cats my whole life, but clearly I haven't.....

  • I'd like to get some tips/tricks as well!

We have three cats and the fur is just insane. I vacuum the rugs & carpet, use lint rollers to remove hair from the upholstery (time consuming & I go through a lot of lint rollers  lol), but I'm mystified as far as dealing with the hardwood floor in the kitchen, dining and bathroom. There are just furballs everywhere! It's so gross I've just about given up.

  • I have this broom (Vileda) and I sweep every couple of days. The dust and fur sticks to the foam part on the front (it's electrostatically charged) and then I just use a dustbuster to get it off.

Are you feeding your cats a high quality food? Good food really helps with their coat. This is a good reference for cat food http://www.petfoodratings.net/cats.html

I've been using the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser for upholstery and it worked really well for a while, but I've noticed that the suction has gone down a bit. I think I need to clean the filter (hard to do) or get a new one. But the other thing I don't like about it is that it blows everything around.

  • We have 3 long haired cats that we need to brush about every other day. We have wood laminate floors.

    1) old school sweeping and swiffering work fairly well on hard surfaces.

    2) brushing the cats, if possible, will help contain/collect some of the fur so it never gets to the floor.

    3) lint rollers for upholstery, but our couch, love seat, and futon (in the den) have slipcovers. Slip covers have their own issues, but they're pretty cute, can be interchangeable, and you can throw them in the washer.

    4) pull out the furniture and clean behind and underneath/dust the baseboards fairly regularly. It will help keep everything from being coated in cat hair.

  • We also have an old house.  Our hardwoods were too far gone to refinish (patches cut out for random things and replaced with plywood).  We put down Pergo.  But like you, we have no carpet, just Pergo, tile and area rugs.  We went with the Dyson DC33.  We decided against the animal.  From the reading I did, it appeared that the animal just has more powerful brushes to dig hair out of carpet, which we didn't have.  I love this vacuum.  It seriously picks up everything.  It has a switch/knob on the base that can switch it from carpet to hard surface to turn the brushes off.  If they're on and you use them on the hard surface, they will blow the hair and dirt away.  When I turn them off to the hard surface setting, it literally sucks hair in from areas that the vacuum isn't even over, it's amazing.  It also picks up big pieces of food, goldfish crackers, etc.  My old vacuum (a Kenmore) used to push around bigger pieces and shoot smaller ones back at my feet.

I use the attachments to clean the couches too.  My only issue with it is that the arm is so long and the hose is really stiff.  It's a bit annoying to use in a small area and when I pull on the hose to get more slack, the vacuum frequently tips over because of how stiff the hose is.  I'm hoping that will fix itself the more I use it.

I feel you though, it's hard to keep up with it.  We have 4 cats and there are ALWAYS dust balls blowing around the house.  If I vacuumed every day I'm sure I could keep on top of it, but I'm a once or twice a week vacuumer.

  • I just did my couch and love seat with a Shark handheld cordless vacuum(it is the pink one) I used the upholstery attachment with the brush.  It worked great.  Now I am trying to teach the cat to not get up there...ha.  We got a microfiber sweeper for the kitchen-laminate floors.  I am trying it out today so I will let  you know what happens.  I am so tired of the hair too.  I vacuumed the curtains with the shark too and that is the only think I have found that works, besides picking it off by hand or using a ton of lint rollers.
