Car Insurance Woes

Oh my.... so H put me in charge of finding new car insurance today... it's already 5pm and I'm failing miserably. I'm about to throw the papers in his face and tell him to find new coverage on his own as soon as he walks in lol... but that would be a little dramatic.... so I'm not. But, I'm so frustrated!!! I've been going to different websites and putting in what we currently have, which I feel like is pretty decent coverage... but as I'm looking at it I feel like we're throwing out so much money and can save by scaling back on coverage a bit. I have no idea what these things mean or where we can scale back. Problem is, whenever I try to speak to an actual person from X company about it, they keep trying to upsell me!

Re: Car Insurance Woes

  • things i've learned about insurance:

never scale back. if you can afford the better coverage, take it. you'll be glad that you did when the day comes that you need it. i recently added DH to my policy and when i couldn't decide whether to stack the policies or not, my boss reminded me of what i had chosen to forgot-insurance is there for when you need it, and when you need it, you'll need all you can get. it's the same reason i added special clauses to my own car insurance policy so that i have a smaller deductible for things like windshield replacement/side mirror repair/etc.

also, don't do it online. you're going to get spam email & mail for the next few years now. go to your local board and get some rec's on some local agencies and call them. they'll be far more helpful and won't try to upsell, since they tend to write policies for difference insurance companies and gain no real benefit to upselling. and they'll be able to help decipher what you really need and what might not be useful.

Yes! This is so true. Sometimes I think we pay more than I'd like - but if we ever get into an accident (god forbid) or if we ever have a fire/etc. at our home (god forbid again), we'll definitely be thankful.

There are plenty of areas in life to skimp - but don't make insurance one of them!

  • Ditto - never scale back coverage.  Get the most you can afford.  I disagree with carcrash about a local agent though, you'll save more money buying directly from the car insurance company.  My parents have an agent and my brother was using the guy, then switched to go directly through GEICO and (no cliche intended) saved a ton of money.

Really, you just have to go through, get quotes from each company, then decide which one you want.  Also, since your husband is a male (duh) make him the primary driver on your cars because car insurance is cheaper for men.

  • Thanks ladies! I was getting sooooo frustrated. I talked to my dad and he said the exact same, it's not worth it to scale back. He came and showed me the difference in scaling back {how little difference it made in the per month amount, but god forbid something happened the big difference it would make in the amount we would have to pay}. I hate feeling pushed around by people over the phone just trying to make money and not recommending what's best!!!! We ended up just leaving everything as is.

  • I totally agree with carcrash, go see a local agent.  Not only can they really help explain what everything is, but they can also talk to you about discounts that you didn't know that you could get.  I can technically still get a student driver discount even though I'm in grad school. All I have to do is show them my grades lol. Also, loyalty to insurance companies can really be rewarded, now a lot of them are doing vanishing deductibles, safe driver discounts if you go without accidents for a few years, etc. So pick a local rep that you like, don't skimp on coverage, and don't switch every few years just because someone in 'cheaper', in the end it'll bite you in the a$$.

  • another thing is if you're comparing companies on your own-make sure the policies are apples to apples, and not apples to oranges. my dad considered switching a few years ago and went through the whole process of hearing out other companies, who were always offering a lower price. but when he would look over the policies with his fine tooth comb (something i do not have patience or enough understanding for), he noticed the policies weren't even close to being the same and the lower cost policy was always a lesser policy. just something to keep in mind.

    good luck!
