Ugh... loans...

Okay, so my federal student loan is due on the 14th of each month.  Well I sent it out in the mail on Monday to give it a week to get there, as usual.  Yesterday, I checked the mail and saw my loan check envelope with a big return to sender stamp on it.  Looks like I forgot a stamp and it apparently takes a whole 5 days to get the envelope back to me.  The mailman couldn't keep it in the box the day he picked it up?  I guess not.

Now, my payment will be late.  I tried to set up the online bill pay, but it takes 1-3 days for them to set up an online account for you since they have to verify your social.  I went through Chase to do online bill pay electronically, but that won't get there until the 16th apparently.  I tried to call the 1-800 number for my loan, and of course, there aren't any real people working on the weekend to talk to.  It gave me the option of changing my payment due date, so I did that, but it said it may not take effect for a week.  Bah!  I NEVER pay bills late, and especially not my $8,000 student loan payment.  I guess all I can do is call on Monday and explain the situation and hope that they understand, but who knows if they will.  I've never made a late payment before.  I don't know what happens when these payments are late.  Do you???  I'm kind of freaking out about it.

Re: Ugh... loans...

  • First off - Student Loans SUCK!!!

I fully believe that if you call and explain the situation they will be willing to work with you.  I've had to deal with the my student loan company on various occasions due to being laid off not once... but twice after I graduated.  And they were always totally willing to work with me.  Good luck with this.  I wouldn't worry too much about it - the payment is in the mail, give them a call and explain what happened, and I would definitely recommend setting up automatic bill pay online so you don't have to worry about when it gets there!

  • Give them a call Monday and explain. If you have never been late before they will grant you a reprieve.  Good luck!

  • With most bills, if you've never been late before, they will waive the late fee the first time as a courtesy.  If you are late again, no such luck.  But definitely call them!  There may even be a grace period of a few days, so if you can pay it over the phone you might be okay.  Good luck!!!
  • I have a great deal of experience with SL.  Are you going through Direct Loans?  I have been late before and they were always willing to work with me.  I have never been issued a late fee.  I now have direct withdraw for them and I have never had a problem.  Direct loans + me = a lifelong relationship (as a result of 12 years of college and 6 figures of debt to them).  Good luck.

  • Don't stress!  Like pp said, if you've never been late before, they will give you a pass.  I definitely think you should make a personal call, or write a personal letter even, to get them to let this one slide.

And they will! :-)  Ppl make mistakes.
