Anyone else on a 45 day cycle w/ their period?

Background-I have recently (past 4 months) started tracking my period, as Dh and I decided last summer that we would "officially" start TTC this summer.  I went off bcp in Aug, because I have never liked any pill I have ever tried (for different reasons) and we have been using condoms ever since.  I have been on the pill since I was 25, had the best experience with Yaz, but when I took a new job I switched to Loestrin because it was a cheaper option till my ins. kicked in.

Before I took the pill I was always irregular, sometimes going a couple of months w/out a period.  My prev. Dr. always said everything was normal, and that it was due to my weight (i've been underweight most of my life).  When I was on BC, it was like clockwork, except when I switched pills (3 times in 4 years) which, again, Dr. said was normal.  When I stopped Bc, it was sporadic at first, I attributed that to my hormones getting back in check.

We moved last fall, and my yearly wasn't due till the end of this month, so I have just been waiting to go see my new Dr. to get the regular yearly checkup and the "Hey, getting ready to get PG" jazz.  I decided a few months ago to start tracking my cycles, in case the new Dr. needed/wanted that info, and I noticed today that it's about 45 days between my periods.  I just think that is so strange, because a reg. monthly cycle is 28 days, right?  45 days seems like a long time to go in between. . 35 days, not that far, but I have never heard anyone going 45 days..but it seems standard for me.

Anyone else have a period cycle like this?  I have an appt the first week of March with my new Dr, so I'm going to bring it up to her, but my brain is starting to go into overdrive with worry about if it will be difficult to get pg...

  • It's common for your cycle to be long and unpredictable when coming off BCP. Not every woman has a "perfect" 28 days cycle. The general rule is to see your doctor if you haven't gotten your period in 60 days. Everyone's "normal" is different. Maybe 45 days is normal for you, but you can discuss it with your doctor and he/she will be able to give you more info.

  • There could be something going on since the avg cycle is anywhere from 27- 33 days. anything over 35 days is cause for a light concern and anything over 60 days is really pushing in.

Your size may be the reason for the sparing cycle but there could be other factors. Do you have a light flow or a heavy flow? Are you mensturating for 3 days or for 12 days? All of these need to be addressed by your doctor. Make note of how many pads or tampons you use along with the absorbancy. Since you are getting ready to TTC, make sure you let the doctor know and see about a female hormone panel. This should tell you what you are lacking in, what you need less of a boost on and so forth.

I used to have really odd cycles but I discovered from char from mom and what I was going through in day1 and 2 was primary dysmenorrhea. I have become a vegetarian, lost a little weight and now have a 28 day cycle (before, I had a 30- 40 day cycle) So, go see your primary and let him/her know your concerns and how you have been "tracking yourself". You are on the right path!

  • I have been on the pill 12 years except for a 8 month break and in that 8 months I was usually irregular but on average was having 40-60 day cycles.  I have endometriosis and was diagnosed with that a few years before going off pill.  I was so miserable off the pill though, I went back on it after 8 months of TTC and pretty much said screw TTC, I would rather not get pg than be that miserable.  I had cramps to the point I would spend a whole day throwing up and another immobilized.

Your weight could have something to do with it but I would guess its likely there is another underlying condition. Definitely go to your doctor and make sure to tell her anything else that seems abnormal to you.

  • I have a crazy cycle, too.  Mine varies from month to month, but it ranges from 30-45 days

I do feel alarmed sometimes when I have the 45 day cycles, but that's been the norm for me for 10+ years now, so I don't see it changing - and, I've always gotten the all-clear from the gyno.

Still, I think it's smart to bring it up to your doctor.  It will ease your mind.
