Dodging Disney In The Delivery Room

I think it could really backfire on them. Even the formula companies don't actually come INTO your room (heck, the photographers didn't even come to visit me)
IMO they can put something into your going home gift bag but them coming into your room really crosses the line
This. Not ok. Just not ok EVER. WTH is wrong with people?
Exactly. HeLL no. Plus, DH is not a Disney fan and he would probably get arrested if they saw these ppl in my room.
Same here. I don't know who'd be more pissed - me or DH.
Hmm...there's another reason for homebirth!
However, I had to read this line and laugh:
Getting an expectant mom thinking about her family's first theme-park visit while her child was in the womb, an exec told the Times, would be like hitting "a home run."
I'm not gonna lie. I have thought about my family's first trip to Disneyland. But we won't be going until our child is at least 5 years old!
While I think that's extremely ridiculous and horrible, I really really love Disney and was totally into the Princesses growing up. I still watch the cartoons and wish I was a princess. My favorite is Sleeping Beauty.
PS. I'm a feminist and wear the pants in my relationship. Oh, and I hope to NEVER have blonde hair. So something in that theory about screwing girls up with high expectations must be flawed. Maybe it's because my parents were good parents and taught me to be a strong person?
Tea Time for Lulu
I think it's fine to watch Disney stories and read fairy tales growing up. I did, too. My favorite was Snow White, which is often panned by feminists. But I also loved Robin Hood and the Rescuers and ones that didn't focus on princesses. I was a tom boy and liked Snow White largely for the fact it took place in the woods, had lots of animals and the funny dwarfs. And now I realize I liked that the prince was gentle, he wasn't a violent guy killing people or dragons to rescue the princess. I never liked Cinderella as much because so much of it focused on what she wore and it felt more girlie to me. I am pretty turned off by the whole Princess merchandising out now because it's not even about the original, individual stories it's just this conglomeration of pink princessiness. I think girls and boys should be exposed to a variety of interests and influences in their growing up so it makes me sad when I see girls whose parents only buy her dolls and pink stuff.
I wondered about the legality of coming into hospital rooms, too. I could see them sneaking in though. I'm sure the press would not be allowed to come into my classroom and speak to me but sales people have snuck in. It happens.

This sounds freaky weird to me, as well as a violation of HIPAA privacy laws. Someone must be screening the moms first to see if they would want to have this "opportunity". I'm sure the most vulnerable are the poorer, less educated moms who probably need the clothing for the kid and don't really see anything wrong with Mickey right from day 1.
What really is frightening is that the second my daughter saw Mickey for the first time (as well as Elmo and Barney) she KNEW them. They are brilliant those people that design these brands and she WANTS Elmo and Barney and Mickey. It doesn't take them five seconds to get totally attached. Which scares me, ya know? Why does it have such a strong hold on her and how is that decreasing the realm of her imagination?
Anyway, I've never been a Disney fan, so maybe I am biased, I hate trends and fads and brands and any kind of mass marketing.
