For those who have had babies or those pregnant, please recommend your prenatal vitamins?  I would like to start taking them but there are so many out there and I don't know which are good and which are crap

  • I'm not taking them, but my friends who are all swear by the gummie ones....ill get a brand for you....they're like quarter sized gummie's with a white top and a pink label....

i wish i was at the point where i could take these......they'd do wonders for my nails and grow my hair out LOL  and ofcourse the obvious...it'd mean we're ready to try :(

  • We decided that we are going to TTC soon so I was doing my research.  First we need to find a bigger place

  • they say you should take them a year before you're gonna try anyway so that works :) we have a 2 bedroom apartment but we'd never be able to turn the office into a baby's room....DH's desk etc is too big to put anywhere else unfortunately so we'll need to upgrade. when i talk to the girls i'll ask about the brand....i think they're at target?

  • We aren't TTC yet but would like to this summer....I started taking Nature Made Pre Natal plus DHA.  I got them from Costco and it was significantly cheaper then WalMart/Target.  They smell funny but don't taste terrible.

**Also, I got the book Taking charge of your Fertility (recommended by people on the getting preg board) and it is an awesome book.  I got it on Amazon used for $1.97 plus $3.99 shipping.  It is about $25.00 at bookstores.

     Good luck!

  • My doctor told me just to take a regular multi plus folic acid...once we are PG then he'll put me on the prenatals...I got Nature made folic acid at Walmart, it was only $2

  • I take NatureMade multi prenatal.  It has 800 mcg folic acid so I don't have to take a separate folic acid pill.  I tried taking their Fish Oil also, since you are supposed to take omega 3 as well, but it left me belching fish ALL day long.  I need to find one that doesn't do that, as it is unbearable.

  • When I was pregnant with L I bought them at BJ's. They also included the fish oil since I didn't want to take 2 pills. They were monsters and they stink but I stuck it out..lol

Just be forewarned prenatal vitamins tend to make you constipated so just make sure you are taking/eating something to counteract that.

  • When my Dad started taking fish oil, they suggested taking them right before he goes to bed so that he wouldn't have the issue with fishy belches...I'd never heard about increasing Omega 3s...but we've been eating a lot of fish so I am not rushing out to get them...Another thing you could do is add flax seed in baked goods

I'd heard that, but I haven't tried it yet.  I tend to have heartburn more frequently at night, so I worried it may aggravate that.  I've heard that there are some brands that don't cause that effect quite as much, but haven't researched it.

They say that increasing Omega 3 helps to stimulate brain development in your baby, and that by taking it as an oil you eliminate the mercury intake that you can get with some fish.

  • I take the already mentioned gummys (VitaFusion PreNatal). It's only been a week, so I don't know how much I'm affected by it, but I started taking it for my hair & nails. They taste pretty good, although there is a slight after taste.

For me, it's easier to remember to take as opposed to pills.

  • I am going to try the gummies....not sure when I would start.  After looking at places around that are bigger and realizing we are not ready to buy yet, it looks like we will hold off TTC until next spring.  My sister is getting married in March of 2012 so I really don't want to take the chance of being ready to pop around that time.  She would be upset that I was trying to steal her thunder which I can see.

  • These are the vitamins I take - you only have to take one per day, they are really easy on your stomach, and my doctor approved of them:

    http://www.amazon.com/Rainbow-Light-Prenatal-Multivitamin-Tablets/dp/B000EE8036

I'd highly recommend them, especially if you have a sensitive stomach.

I also take DHA (helps with baby's brain and eye development) - this is the brand, because they are safe for pregnant women, as they are not sourced from mercury containing fish:

    http://www.amazon.com/Spectrum-Essentials-Prenatal-Softgels-Bottle/dp/B0011DN9EO/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1297694122&sr=1-12

Just a note - your doctor can prescribe prenatals to you (not sure if they will/can before you're pregnant?) and I'm sure it's much cheaper since you only pay your copay.  Because I have such a sensitive stomach, I stuck with the ones that I had been taking for a year or so before we got pregnant since they have worked so well for me...
