I love, love, love my Hoover SteamVac. It has Spin Scrub Brushes to really get your carpets clean. I highly recommend this extractor. It works amazingly... : )
Also for spot cleaning we sell a ton on the Bissell Spot Bot. Its great for maintaining your carpet between shampooing. You just set it on the spill or stain and it does all the work for you! Heard great things about this little machine!
We sell both...here's the links if you want to check them out! Hope this helps!

We have a Hoover Steam Vac, and I love it. It can do spot cleaning too because it has an upholstery attachment.
I do not recommend Rug Doctors unless you live in a rental and are only cleaning the carpet one time. They are heavy, and they don't do that good of a job. I recommend purchasing something you can use over and over again, and our Hoover does a way better job of cleaning than the Rug Doctor that I tried did.
I don't use the chemical cleaning solution because if you don't get it all up it will attract more dirt. I use vinager and water, it smells as you do it but the smell goes away after the carpets dry and it is a natural way to disinfect and clean your carpets. I also recommend if you do use the cleaners that you run a cycle of just water after you finish to make sure you get all of the soap up.
