Anyone else depressed over taxes?

DH was very excited to do our taxes.  He wanted to see how much he'd get back.  Welllll that'd be none and pay the government loads of money! YEEEHAWW!

Today I got the form the change my deductions at work.  I was claiming 1 (changing to 0) and DH claims 0 and we STILL are getting raped by the IRS.

So depressing.  I'm going to go drown myself in mac and cheese.

Re: Anyone else depressed over taxes?

  • I always get anxious around tax time. Our stuff will sometimes fluctuate because of DH's job.
  • Honestly, no.  As anti-government as I am, I'm thankful that DH and I are well off enough that we do sometimes have to pay taxes.  There are plenty of people out there that struggle to make ends meet and would LOVE to be in our financial position.  While I don't think anyone likes that kind of unexpected expense, I do chalk it up as a debt to society.
  • I hate tax time lately....before I was a big girl with a big job, I got back lots of money...now, we get nothing and we OWE.  I hate it, but like PP said, I am thankful to be in this situation as bad as it stinks to owe money!
  • Ditto derky.. DH thinks of it this way: if you're getting your money up front, that means you have the opportunity to earn interest on it (instead of the government keeping it, giving you no chance to do so).

I am by no means a tax professional (yet), but without knowing all of your particulars if you were claiming 1 and DH was claiming 0 you should have a decent bit of $$ withheld.  Now there definitely could be some circumstances that would require you to still owe taxes, but you might just want to double check your calculations to make sure everything is correct.

Many times people owe quite a bit of money since they don't have much withheld from their paycheck, which as a PP mentioned could be a more advantageous approach since you earn interest on the money over the year before you give it to the gov't.

I am currently a fan of tax time since we are still able to get a refund.  Although I think this year might be the last of our "large" returns.  But like others said, that doesn't necessarily mean that next year's situation isn't an improvement.

Yes, over $10K total withheld from Fed & State btwn the two of us.  I've used tax turbo tax and tax act and got the same result. I know why state is screwed up b/c DH gets his taxes paid to VA.  Now if we only had to pay a few hundred I wouldn't be so frustrated, but have to struggle to get the money to pay our taxes is very depressing.  Paying over $10K in taxes throughout the yr and still having to pay over $1K at tax time is making harsh....  We don't have $1K sitting around, if we did I wouldn't be so worried about paying our bills.

This is our situation. We are pretty much broke, we make sh*tty money, and we still OWE every year. I freaking hate tax time :(

Use the IRS withholdings calculator to prevent this in the future. It's pretty reasonably accurate when it comes to having to withhold extra. Careful budgeting is key.

Figure out WHY you are owing. Where can you up contributions to charity, IRAs, retirement? Are you claiming the std. deduction or itemizing? Where do you fall on a tax table... at the beginning of a category/tier or the top? You can't look at it as I'm paying X amount throughout the year and then you owe Y on top of that... as crappy as it is, it's reality. While the tax brackets have their flaws, unfortunately that's the way it is for everyone (well, except for very low income).

We've already upped our donations this year compared to last.  We just didn't have the extra cash this last year with getting settled in our new home (bought Nov '09).  We got everything paid off in November of this last year, so we're in a better place now, but it's still frustrating to try and come up with over $1K in 2 months.  DH is taking extra hours at work (which means he's away from home traveling anywhere from Ohio to Florida) to try and help get the money.  I've already filled out the forms at work to get my deductions changed to 0.

We have to claim standard, our itemized deductions is JUST below standard.  Thank you for your suggestions, its something I will really look into for next years taxes.  Hindsight is always 20/20.

  • We lucked out this year. The only reason we didn't owe was b/c we could deduct some tuition that was billed last year (for classes this spring), we had a sliding door that we qualified for an tax credit, some donations we made, and one other credit we qualified for. Our mortgage interest certainly helped too. I made DH change his withholding b/c he was at Married 2 and we won't have the same amount of deductions this year. I was annoyed b/c I know we discussed withholdings when he started his job and I know if he'd said he was Married 2 I would have put that as a nogo.
  • I am going to work on ours this weekend...nervous though.  We always owe since H is self-employed.  We qualified for the first-time home buyers credit this year so we are hoping that we break even this year...but it's always so hard to tell!

  • This year worked out okay for us since we're both in school and basically have very little income.
