The Best Fried Food I Ever Ate

Okay, so this is obviously not a healthy one but we all have our guilty pleasure foods. So tell us about the best fried food dish you've ever had and where we could try it.

I'm going to choose one I've already mentioned but is worth mentioning again. The sopapillas (fry bread) at Zia Cafe in Santa Barbara. They are really yummy with honey on top, which they have at every table. You can also get fajitas made with sopapilla instead of tortilla. My runner up would be the sopapillas at Tito's in San Leandro. They put cinnamon and sugar on top of theirs so they're more of a dessert item.

  • Either the fresh churros we got from a roadside stand when we were in Baja (night and day difference between those and the Costco/Disneyland-style churros) or the homemade loukoumades we had in Greece. If you haven't tried them, loukoumades are fried dough balls drizzled with honey. These were fresh and hot, and had just been made by a group of elderly ladies in the village we were staying in.

Oh! And I almost forgot the elephant ears at the Portland Saturday Market. They're a huge part of my childhood, and when I moved here from OR I was heartbroken that nobody had ever heard of elephant ears. Again, fried dough, but big and flat and sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar. The closest we have here is funnel cakes, which are NOT THE SAME!

  • Yum..beignets at Cafe du Monde in New Orleans. I ate them shamelessly for breakfast every day of our trip there.
  • Fried artichoke hearts from that little store right off 101 in Castroville. Omg.

A close second: the fries at the vegetarian restaurant here that recently closed. Sad.

My favorite place on earth: The Amargosa Valley.

I thought you'd mention those. Too bad it closed since I never got to try them.
  • First impulse: the Fish and Chips and hush puppies from Jonathan's here in Menlo Park.

Second Impulse: Crawfish Beignets from Brenda's in SF. I dream about these!

  • Picking the best fried food I've ever eaten is like asking me to pick a favorite child (metaphorically, I only have one kid so of course he's my favorite, lol).

Personally, all fried food is the BEST!

Jack's Urban Fries are high high high on the list.

The fried banana dessert at PF Chang's. My FILs deep fried latke's with red pepper flakes. Kettle chips at the brew pup in the El Dorado in Reno.

No where specific, but good calamari anywhere. ;)

  • Corn nuggets at Niffer's Place in Auburn, AL.

They're basically deep fried balls of creamed corn.  And they're amazing.

  • Malasadas in Kauai. This sweet Portuguese woman has a little stand in front of KMart in Lihue (I know, it sounds awful but trust me on this.) She cooks these "donuts" every day, to order, till she runs out of batter, and you can get them sugared or with cinnamon sugar. They are so f-ing good.
  • I love my grandmommy's fried chicken! I also love a good chicken fried steak or chicken. The last place I had it was TGI Fridays in NY, I think...can't remember. I also liked the fish and chips I got from this restaurant in Port Jefferson, NY with the malted vinegar. Mmmm.
