What do you use to store flours & sugars?

I am re-organizing my kitchen.  My mom always had glass jars with flip lids for her flour/sugar stuff.  DH & I found ceramic ones years ago, and they look great and are air tight - but they don't hold much.  I fill them with the flour or sugar and then have 1/2 - 3/4 of a bag left to store elsewhere - I don't have a lot of storage space, so that doesn't cut it.  I don't like keeping it in the bags because it is hard to keep it closed and they are bulky (and can't stack them).

I would love to find good plastic (perferably stackable and not super expensive) or even glass storage for these things that will hold the entire standard size bag. Anyone have a recommendation?  Thought someone might have something they love that they could recommend...TIA!

  • This - I love it. It's light and has two little wheels so I can store it in a harder to reach upper cabinet but still access it no problem.

  • I haven't used any of these items but have heard good things about crate and barrel storage. Ina Gartner uses the big glass jars for her flour/sugar and they are beautiful on a countertop. There are smaller stackable glass jars as well as the OXO plastic containers...not super cheap but they look really handy.

We're moving into our house this summer and I plan on using some of these items for food staple storage.

  • I just drop the paper sacks in a gallon sized zipper-ziplock.  I can put two of the smaller sacks in one bag. Then I try to store all the bags in open plastic tubs, about the size that you could fit a pair of shoes into - the tubs are just to keep the bags and sacks from tearing on the stupid metal racks in my pantry.

  • I use the Snapware or Lock and Lock containers.  There's one that is just a litle bigger than a carton of ice cream (rectangular) and it holds a large bag of sugar or flour perfectly.

I have a label maker and I label each one on the lid and on the side facing out.

I also use the smaller ones for baking soda, baking powder, and cornstarch.

They are about $7 at BBB (don't for get to use a coupon for a 20% discount) or they sell them on the QVC website.

  • I have the OXO pop ones from BBB and I love them. I bit pricey, but well worth it IMO.

  • I have a rubbermaid set of 4 different sized clear containers.  The large one holds a bag of flour, next size holds a bag of sugar, next size holds a bag of powdered sugar and the littlest one holds a bag of brown suger. They were inexpensive and are clear so you can see what is in them.  They will go in the pantry when it is done, for now they are stacked in a cupboard.  Every so often when they are all empty I just throw them in the dishwasher to clean them up.  I do have an OXO pop up for pasta and love those too.

  • Rubbermaid from Target.  That stuff lasts forever.  And it's in a slide-out cabinet with all my other baking stuff (baking soda, baking powder, brown sugar, extracts, etc.) so it doesn't really matter what they look like.

I had a few things with the clicky-snappy lid - the kind that folds over on each side.  But they're really a major pain and I'm slowly replacing them with the pricey, but awesome, OXO pop-ups.

  • Mine are made by Kitchen Aid. They're stainless steel with glass lids. They're airtight, easy to keep clean, and they hold entire bags of flour & sugars. I adore them.
