Pears

I peeled some pears tonight, stuck them in the microwave to soften them up for T and they sparked lots and started flaming.  I swear, I'm not lying! :)  Has anyone had this happen to them?

They were ripe enough that she ended up just eating them raw...and did fantastic! But the sparking etc kinda freaked me out.  It happened the last time I tried to nuke pears too. Weird

Re: Pears

  • had to google it!

tons of recipes out there for microwaved pears, and none of the sample of 5 I looked at had any warning. But they all did say to cover with something. Did you cover?

  • That's weird!  I just googled it, and there are other fruits and veg which also do this - maybe because of certain minerals on them.  Weird!

  • it is very weird!!!  I didn't cover them but I think I'll just refrain from nuking them....I think if I buy ones that are riper, then they would be soft and just fine for her.  It's just totally weird that I know there isn't any metal in it, yet still sparks/flames like their is! :)

  • Mixed veggies can spark.  It's weird but safe as far as I know.
  • That is crazy!   Yikes!   I like to buy the asian pears because they are nice and soft and Nolan loves them.   Bartletts tend to be firmer and grainier.  Yuck,  I don't care for them.
  • That would have totally freaked me out!!  I've always given her pears raw, as long as they're ripe they're soft enough.  Note to self: don't microwave pears.

  • Yeah, I've had sparking foods before- carrots are especially notorious.  I also googled it and it has to do with the minerals and stuff in there.  It's safe (well, for the food, maybe not your microwave) but it also freaks me out.  I hate the smell lingering in the air afterwards too!
