I received a job offer in writing 2 weeks ago. I wasn't able to review at work and got back to HR on Monday with a salary negotiation. The HR rep told me she spoke with the managers where I would be working and would get back to my at the end of the day. I have been following up every few days but the HR rep keeps telling me that they don't have an answer for me yet.
I am especially suprised because I know the situation that the group was in and they need someone ASAP. In addition, when the HR rep spoke to me on the Monday after the job offer, she said the group was eager to get a response.
What could possibly be taking so long?
Re: Job Offer Negotiation taking very long
Is it possible that they are going to withdraw the offer? That seems so extreme. I thought it would be a pretty simple 'yes/no/something in the middle' and then I could go from there. I just don't understand what could be taking so long that the HR rep couldn't just tell me (say, if someone is on vaca).
By any chance are you going fed? My salary negotiation took 6 weeks. And by "negotiation", I mean that I countered on the same day I received the offer and it took 6 weeks for them to get back to me. I checked in about once a week. HR would not respond about what was taking them so long, but I got to see the email traffic when I started from my boss. No lie, there was an email EVERY DAY about my counter offer over those 6 weeks.
If they've offered to you, my inclination is that they have chosen you and are working out the details. They wouldn't rescind the offer before saying "We can't offer you what you're asking, here's our final offer, take it or leave it." I know how frustrating this process can be, believe me. Just try to hang on.
They're deciding if they think you're worth it. Or they're working with internal processes to determine if what you're asking for puts some internal equity issues at risk. Or they're deciding if they think this is indicative of whether you'll be a problem employee. Or they're really busy. Lots of things could be up.

I didn't read it that way -- i read it that she got the offer 2 weeks ago (Friday) and didn't talk to them until the monday after the weekend. And it's been THAT long since hearing back.
That's correct. It took me one business day to respond.
Thanks for the replies. I have put a number of things on hold until I find out what is happening with this job so I am very anxious to find out.
