Re: Grammy's
So far we've only watched the first bit, up until, gaga won for best album and lady A performed... right around there. So based on that,
I watched! (sorta)
I care alot, I love award shows and the Grammy's have been one of my favorites (I was always a music fan before a TV/movie fan).
I think Gaga is doing a really great job being the new Madonna, freaking everyone out and being werid and new and controversial. I thought it was adorable when Jaden Smith came on stage and Will and Jeda were so proud and doing the moves in their seats. Miranda Lambert is awesome, I'm so happy for her, this year is going to be so great for her! If I were Lady A, I'd be sooo tired of singing 'Need You Now'. I know they have other singles, I just hope that one of them gets as big as their first one... or else I'll fear they've peaked too soon. Plus, the girl in that group changes her hair so drastically that I only knew it was them because of the guys in the group.
The Usher/Beiber relationship creeps me out just a little bit.
I love Norah Jones!! The Jolene cover with John and Keith was awesome.
Also, Jennifer Hudson looked AMAZING. And Christina was trying to redeem herself vocally. The Aretha tribute was pretty good, it was really long, but each of the songs were done really well... Christina as always, could have toned it down... at least she didn't look like a total trainwreck this time.
I was reading the Entertainment's comments as I was watching, and they mentioned Niki Minaj's outfit and said they feel bad for whoever sat behind her, but I didn't see it yet! I can't wait to see. They also said that Christina packed on the pounds that Jennifer lost, which I laughed at, but I don't think she looks THAT bad...
And I didn't even finish watching! whooh..
I thought the show overall was a success. Lots of great performances. My favorites of the night were Eminem, Rhianna, and Dr. Dre, as well as Mick Jagger, and Muse.
I'm thrilled that Esperanza Spaulding won Best New Artist. I know everyone thought Beiber was going to get it, but I thought it was really refreshing that an artist who isn't played on mainstream radio won it. I love her. She's fabulous. I was also totally psyched that Muse won Best Rock Album over Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Neil Young, and that atrocious Pearl Jam album.
My WTF's for the night were, of course, Lady Gaga - what was up with the egg costume, and also, I'm pretty sure you ripped off that song from Madonna. Ever heard "Express Yourself"? Yeah.
And also, a WTF goes to Ceelo for wearing a giant-primary-colored-turkey-meets-Elton-John costume.
ETA: I love John Mayer, and I loved the Jolene cover with Norah Jones and Keith Urban (two of my favorites), but seriously John, you're starting to look like a pedophile. Get help, brother.
I didn't watch all of it (I was way too tired from a busy weekend), but I'm hoping to catch some highlights later.
I'm not a big Gaga fan (sorry!) but this was the first time that I saw a performance that I could actually appreciate. She can sing and dance, and obviously puts on a good show. However, I felt it was a little too Madonna-esque (the song sounds like Express Yourself, and she had a bit of the Madonna look). Let me clarify, I think she is talented, she can obviously sing and write, I just think the theatrics are a bit too much, to the point of being annoying.
I agree with Memily, when Jaden Smith was on stage and they showed Will and Jada, it was adorable. He did really well, too!
H and I discovered Mumford and Sons about a year ago, and I thought they did pretty good!
Bruno Mars did great (I got chills watching it, I thought it was unique, and he is pretty talented).
Oh, and Memily, I came across this pic of Nikki Minaj this morning and thought the same thing...ugh.

I can't wait to see Eminem and Dr. Dre's performance.
I'm so over Gaga. I'd honestly be more shocked by her if she showed up to an awards show wearing J.Crew or Gap.
I forgot all about the Grammys until I checked FB before I went to bed and I saw everyone talking about it.
My question is - was the *N SYNC reunion on the Grammys rumors true?
OMG that's right! I totally forgot about Ceelo... thank goodness Gwen was there to wear amazing shoes and make everything ok. I was like, what is he, the new NBC mascot?! The puppet thing made no sence, but I laughed.
And yes. Gaga totally took Express Yourself and changed the words, I said that to Matt the first time I heard it. And I said John Mayer was trying really hard to look like Johnny Depp and it wasn't working for him.
I missed the first few performances of the Grammys. I came in when they did the Aretha tribute, but was cleaning the kitchen through that and started baking cupcakes.
I love Bruno Mars, but only caught a bit of his performance.
I love Cee Lo... Love him, his music, his quirks, his entire performance was amazing. The puppets the whole nine. Well, the whole eight. I could have done without Gwen.
John Mayer is still like DNR to me. I can't bring myself to like him. He looked skeevy last night. I love Norah though. She was great.
I was mad that Lady A won over Jay-Z, Bruno Mars, and Cee Lo. They were last in my book. They have a catchy song, but not the best, imo.

Lame. That's the only thing I was looking forward to about the Grammys.
I only watched until around 9 or so...I'll have the rest recorded so I can catch up today:)
Of course, I thought Gaga was awesome. I loved the performance even though it was not as crazy as she usually is.
I agree with Memily...on the Bieber/Usher thing. Kiiiinda weird. I mean I love them both, but the dance moves they were doing together were just a bit strange:/

Oh, lord! Aha she's so crazy. She did a bit on SNL where she was the bride of blackenstien and she kept the hair on for her performance because it was right after, but I think she really got into it... between that hair and her booty raising her up a good few inches extra, she needs to be in the back so no one gets gipped.
I don't think we need a new one, but she's this generation's weird new ground breaking artist. I have to admire her courage to be the crazy one, but it would be funny to see her show up in Gap one day...
They are definitely icons and in a completely different league than Gaga for sure.
Respectfully, only time will tell for sure. Lady Gaga could very well eclipse Madonna and in 20 years, they'll be comparing the new entertainers to her. Or she could be a flash-in-the-pan gimmick act. The thing is, it's still to early in her career to call that, one way or the other.
Personally, I think she's like a great performance artist and while I don't love everything or every song she does, she can be amusingly entertaining.
I caught parts of it. I agree with mcd re: Gaga. I don't think there's any way to really know for sure what her impact will be. Though her latest song is eerily close to Madonna's, I don't see her as the "new" Madonna. They're very different artists. I actually think Gaga has a bit more raw talent than Madonna, though both are superb performers.
I liked the "Jolene" song that Norah did with Keith Urban and Johnny Depp - I mean John Mayer.
I thought it was weird that Katie Perry had her wedding ceremony playing in the background.
I thought that Miranda Lambert was singing a bit flat and couldn't listen to her whole performance because it hurt my head.
Really liked the Bob Dylan/Mumford/Avett performance and Mick Jagger is ridiculous for his age.
Most of the fashion was really "meh" for me. Jennifer Hudson looked amazing and I thought Jewel wore the perfect pregnant lady dress.

I'm late, but I agree with a lot of the points already made: Usher/Bieber is just weird, glad Bieber didn't win Best New Artist, thought Katy Perry's performance was strange especially when they're are already rumors of divorce, John Mayer looks super skeevy, Lady A is overrated, Miranda Lambert is underrated, but still butchered that song.
I also agree that it's too early to tell about Gaga. I appreciate that she puts a lot of thought and planning into her work. She's not some pawn of the music industry (we're looking at you Katy Perry). She, herself, really works on every aspect of her songs, look, and performances, and I respect that. I think Madonna is talentless, icon or not, so I wouldn't compare the two.
I was going to start a Grammy fashion thread, and then I decided that 90% of them looked awful. I flipped through a slideshow this morning, and I can't believe I'm saying this, but Kathy Griffin was my favorite. Jennifer Hudson looks great, but that dress didn't fit her boobs. Everybody else was just trying too hard to be slutty/rock n' roll. Even the Glee girls were disappointing.
Ha!!
