Because I Just Want To Say Something About It

Saturday at work, I had to shovel the sidewalks. I hate having to do that and was even more unhappy about it because the snow stopped around 7pm and second shift really could have done it and not left it up to me. As I'm putting down the salt, I found a $50 sitting on the sidewalk. I felt bad just taking it, so I put it in an envelope, wrote on it, locked it in the cash drawer, and wrote a note in the logbook to let everyone know about it. Manager came in after me and I explained to her what happened and she said she was going to lock it in the safe.

I emailed District Manager to let her know about it, not letting anyone know I emailed her because things get weird with money and I just wanted to make sure I had a paper trail going on it. She said if no one claimed it, I could have it.

I didn't work Sunday, when I came in Monday I didn't see it in the drawer (mind you I didn't search for it, I just looked where I had put it in there and it wasn't there). I assumed Manager locked it in the safe since there was no note about anyone claiming it.

I came in to get my check Thursday and District Manager was here. I asked her about it and she said no one claimed it, I could have it, she would get it out of the cash drawer for me. I told her I hadn't seen it in there all week, I thought Manager locked it in the safe. She checked the cash drawer, then checked the safe.

Guess what? It's gone. District Manger is VERY upset that someone who works for her could just take it and has sent out an email that if no one tells her what's going on, she wants everyone to take a lie detector.

Most employee "chit-chat" on it, out of the list of people who it could be, no one believes that anyone on that list would take it and it got misplaced. I'm surprised a big white business envelope could get misplaced and District Manager and I have both searched around the drawer, nothing. I would be surprised to find out it was misplaced in some random place.

I just can't believe someone would do that. It was $50, sure that's gas or groceries, but if you really needed it that badly, you could talk to District Manager and she would help you. She's always been very giving and that's why she's so upset to find out she can't trust someone here.

I'd just really like to tell the person who did it to think about it like I did. That could have been someone's last $50. We're a hotel, people are far from home, what if they needed that? I don't want the money, I don't need it. If I had received the money, H and I probably would have just had a nice dinner with it. But you decided that you needed it instead and that's fine, if someone honestly had said they needed it I would give it to you. But please think about the fact that it wasn't yours and although no one came to claim it, what if they had? What if they had really needed it? Most likely they were from out of town and you don't know there story. Can you honestly feel ok with having taken it? I couldn't.
