Valentine's Day Randoms

I made breakfast today. Scrambled eggs with a bit of cheese, sourdough french toast, bacon, fruit bowl and OJ. Tonight I'm thinking Blue cheese steak with potatoes and broccoli and something for dessert. The rest of the week we will eat like the rabbits.  ;)

Re: Valentine's Day Randoms

  • Sounds delicious.

I got a small box of chocolates last night.  Big Smile  So easy to please.  Hehe.

  • We celebrated Valentine's Day yesterday by making lots of deliciousness.  For dinner I made chicken cordon bleu, asparagus risotto, and a winter salad with a citrus dressing and homemade croutons.  DH made chocolate espresso cookies and French martinis.

    YUM!

  • We don't celebrate V-Day.  It'll probably an unromantic night of going to the gym, showering, then eating leftovers.  Lol.

  • I'm ridiculously excited for my split pea soup for lunch today.

I don't like Valentines Day other than seeing the crafts and recipes that go with it.  Other than that, it just feels like a Hallmark -forced holiday to me.  But, with the kids, they make a big deal at their schools so I have to do something?

I don't really get why schools celebrate Valentine's Day.  It seems like such an adult holiday.  Plus, I remember being in elementary school and exchanging valentines and it was always kind of weird because you had to exchange them with everyone so no one would be left out, but it just seemed so awkward, KWIM?

I see it the opposite way.  I feel like V-Day is more a kids holiday.  Bright pink hearts?  Pink and fluffy stuffed animals?  Cheesy cards? Candy?  I mean, that kind of stuff screams little kid.

  • Speaking of Valentine's Day cards... here's something sort of related:

My grandpa recently passed away and I spent most of last week up north with my family.  One day, we spent a couple of hours going through his house and trying to get that project organized.  The house that he lived in was the house that he was born in in 1932 -- so his parents lived there before him.  And there is still a lot of stuff in that house from when his parents lived there.  We found some very cool old stuff (toaster from 1922, Time magazine from 1934...).

One of the things that I found was a "postcard album".  It is like a photo album, but made for keeping postcards.  It was full of post cards, holiday cards, and photos dating from 1905 to 1930 (although the vast majority were from 1910-1916).  I spent some time reading through some of them, and it was so cool.  A lot of them were in German which I couldn't read, but most were in English.  The post cards were all addressed to my great great grandmother (my great grandmother must have inherited the album), and most of them were from her kids, several of whom had moved to Detroit to work at the auto factories (they sent postcards with the factory pictures on one side and a note "this is where I'm working" on the other side).

But in addition to postcards with quick notes ("I'll be home on the morning train on Sunday."  "I got your letter and I'll write soon."  "Please send me my grey sweater, it's cold here."), there were also lots of Christmas cards, Thanksgiving cards, Halloween cards, Easter cards, Valentine's day cards (see there's the link), and even birth announcements.  I had so much fun going through them.

I guess I just see it as more of a romantic holiday.

  • Kasa, this is *way* cool.
  • Kasa - What an amazing to find and look through!  So cool.

All the food mentioned in this post sounds noms.

We don't usually do much of anything for VD.  Last year I baked Andy a carrot cake from scratch, but he's trying to be healthier and lose weight so I decided against delicious baked goods this year.  He announced last night that he wants to cook me dinner tonight though, so I'll take that. :-)

  • Every year, Valentine's Day comes and XN does something sweet or has something planned, and then I feel badly that I don't have anything planned to do something nice for him in return.

This year is no exception. Confused You'd think I'd learn and plan ahead.

  • Kasa~  That is very cool!

We don't technically celebrate Valentine's day.  I use it as an excuse to cook something we normally don't eat.  So it is a gift to both of us, I love to spend time in the kitchen and Scott loves to eat.  Smile

This year we are having steak with a rosemary and mushroom gravy (this in itself is a gift to scott since I am not a big meat eater) with rosemary roasted potatoes, broccoli and rosemary and salt crusted rolls.  Oh yeah and chocolate dipped strawberries for dessert.  I am now realizing that my pregnancy hunger may have overtaken my brain when I planned this menu.Embarrassed

  • So last week my BFF in NJ got fired from her job. In that same week she had 4 interviews and got hired to be an office manager for a furniture company. She was unemployed for all of 5 days. of the difference between our economy in MI and theirs in NJ.

LOL, yeah you think? It was totally unintentional too.  I just went through recipes and thought "oh this looks good, and this looks good. . ."

I did the same thing a few months ago but only with blue cheese.

  • I really want to go to Myrtle Beach.  I wonder how T would tolerate a 17 hour car ride.  Wink

Not in March or April.  Crying

  • Fly. We went from Chicago to Myrtle Beach on Spirit (I know you hate them, but they aren't SO bad for a short nonstop) and our tickets were $95 RT. We stayed at SeaGlass and didn't need a car--just took a cab to and from the airport.

Are you a $9 fare club member?

I think we'll be staying at Harbor Lights and we plan on renting a car (unless we drive down there...a mini van - 4 adults and 2 car seats.)

  • Speaking of V-Day, I just dug through the diaper bag to find TH card that I bought him two weeks ago. We decided since we are going on vacation soon, not to do anything. However, he and Allison went to Coscto yesterday and bought me dz roses.  She got to pick them out and picked white over red and pink. I was surprised.

TH is supposed to give me a message last night, but I was up all night with Amelia last night. I only slept from around 10:30 to midnight. She got a really bad diaper rash and was miserable all night. I felt so bad for her. I think I am going to go to bed at 8:30. I figured we can do something special another night.

Yay for roses, but boo for diaper rashes and no sleep.  Hope Mia is feeling better today.

  • Kasa, what an awesome find.  And how lucky for the album to be found by you.  I'll bet you appreciated it more than most might.

GVSU - hope Mia feels better, and she's sleeps well tonight.  Ow.

I love hearing stories like this.  So much family history in just an album.  That is so neat that you had the opportunity to check it all out.  Maybe the letters wrote in German are romantic....I wonder how you could find someone that speaks fluent German, that could translate for you.
