Can I use a carpet cleaner on a mattress?

Normally we have a waterproof pad on DS1's bed, but his pull-up leaked 2 nights close together (before I was able to wash the pad and get it back on.  Can I use a shampooer on his bed?  I don't want his bed to have a mark, and more importantly, I don't want it to smell like urine.  We paid good money for a 3 y.o.'s mattress (which is so comfy), I want it to last a while.

Re: Can I use a carpet cleaner on a mattress?

  • I would probably try a laundry stain remover and then either baking powder or some other odor eliminator. I use Zero Odor from BB&B for pet odor removal and it workds great. I believe they also have a stain remover in the same line.
  • I'd guess the shampooers are too harsh (think of the difference in texture between a mattress and your carpet, which is meant to be walked on) but if you have a shampooer that has a wand attachment with no bristles, it might do some good. those things can suck pretty strongly. If it was my bed, or the bed of a loved one, I'd avoid carpet cleaners as the detergent. they have such strong chemically odors. can you get more than one mattress pad to avoid going without one in the future? one to wash, one to use kind of thing?

That's the plan, we just haven't gotten around to it.  I originally just bought 1 because we didn't know if we'd like it or not.  Now the damage has been done.

  • I have successfully used the upholstery attachment from my Hoover steam cleaner to clean mattresses. I used a vinegar and water mixture as the cleaning solution. Make sure you extract as much water as you can, and then point a fan on it for a couple hours. It will be fine.

This, except I used a Bissell Little Green. Worked great!
