The Best Thing I Ever Ate (Hometown Favorite)

I missed this one a couple of days ago. So what is your favorite dish from your hometown? Where can we get it if we visit?

Calzones at DiCiccio's in Fresno (they are also in San Jose). There are several locations of this restaurant and they have slightly different menus but they are all run by the same family. My family has been going there for years because my grandparents lived in San Jose for 30 years and discovered them then. When my parents moved to Fresno it was a tradition to go there. Their sauce is so good as is their bread. So the calzone is my favorite, they use lots of sauce (but you can ask for less). Yum, yum. They also give you a piece of salami, mozzarella and a pepperoncini on the side of your dinner salad.

Re: The Best Thing I Ever Ate (Hometown Favorite)

  • Restaurants come and go to often in my hometown to have a favorite. I do miss Pinky's Pizza a lot which was a WC institution until they were forced to close two years ago.

Sad What was your favorite Pinky's dish? Just for nostalgia's sake?

What about Giant Hamburger?? I remember my parents taking me there as a kid. Of course, I don't eat there anymore...

  • Ooohhh, this is a good one. Except that I can't decide between Santa Clara (where I grew up), Chico (my college town) and Sacramento (my home for the last 8 years and where we'll raise our family).....so, here's all three. =)

Santa Clara...The bread at Florentine's with the cheese spread, mmmm. (If you are hungry for more than bread, try the spinach ravioli with marinara sauce.)

Chico...There are, again, too many to name, so here are the best of the best...Breakfast goes to Morning Thunder, must try a side of the potatoes. Burger, The Sourdough Bear Burger, mmmm. Pizza, Celestino's or Frankie's...any kind will be delicious. Beverage...in a town that is full of excellent (cheap) drinks...you must head to Sierra Nevada Brewery for the pints at $2.50 a piece...you won't find a better price outside of Chico for that.

Sacramento...I don't know if I have a hometown favorite here or just a laundry list of restaurants I'd miss if I were to ever leave....so here's the laundry ;) Mikuni's, Arigato, Lucca, Jack's, Dos Coyotes, Thai Cottage, El Palmar, and I'm sure many many more I'm forgetting.

  • In WC, I loved Sorrentos Fettucini Alfredo and my favorite chinese place was Spring Garden. I haven't found Chinese food anywhere else that I love that much.

  • Bagels from the Bagelry in downtown Bellingham, WA.
  • There's a dish called "No Names" at a Mexican restaurant in the town where I grew up. They're basically mini deep-fried burritos. SO delicious, and very famous in our town.
  • Frosted Mocha at cafe Borrone's or orange beef from Su Hong. Both are still in Menlo OPark ( not technically my hometown, but spent most of my time there, and these are the things I look forward to if I'm in the area.

  • How about college favorite? Freebirds in Isla Vista near SB for their BBQ chicken burrito. Mmmmm.
  • My hometown is on the other side of the world, and has better hummus and falafel than anything you can get in the states.

Wait, did I know you went to UCSB? Do I have amnesia? Woodstock's Pizza was my favorite IV restaurant. I love their spicy sauce. Tio Alberto's was my favorite burrito place. And, I'm biased because I worked there, but IV Bakery had the best pastries. I'm not even sure it's still there. The crispy cinnamon roll was the best. The apple sombrero was also awesome.

We always got a pizza with linguisa, garlic, and sliced onions and a Sam Adams on the side.

DH and my brother really like that place but it never grew on me.

I LOVE DiCiccio's! Their calazones are to die for and their bread is soooo good. We live by two of them. I grew up in a small town just south of Fresno and there is a restaurant called Sal's that has the BEST Mexican food ever. There is also a Sal's in Fresno which I think is just as good but everyone says "it's not the original." Yeah, well, I'm not driving 30 minutes every time I want Sal's. There is also a killer Mediterranean restaurant in Fresno called House of Kabaab (sp?).

Yay another DiCiccio's fan! I almost mentioned Sal's, too. Yeah, is that the tiniest hole in the wall or what? How anyone can find it I don't know. I have only been taken there by others. It's like it's someone's house. And yeah, way outside of town. I don't think I've been to House of Kabob, only Phoenician Garden. I like Mediterranean Grill and Cafe which is Lebanese, another out of the way hole in the way place. And George's for Greek food. Ah, Fresno really does have good food.
  • We went to George's once. It was good but it was expensive. Fortunately, H had a gift certificate he got from work otherwise we couldn't afford it.

I haven't been in a long time but it didn't used to be expensive. That's too bad if it is now.

Chico is my hometown and all of the stuff you mentioned is great! Here are my favs:

    • Pollo Asado burrito from Aca Taco on W. Sac (not the downtown location!). Huge and tasty and cheap ($4.25)
    •  Sweet Caroline BBQ Ribs at Smokin' Mo's BBQ. Sooooo good. Also try their garlic fries!
    • Northern Light Tempura Sushi rolls at Japanese Blossom.
  • Los Panchos take-out Mexican food - anything on the menu is great. I love their BCR (bean, cheese, rice) burritos.
