store picture online- with download available

DH and I are getting a new PC, and need to combine pictures from a seriousy old dinasour desktop and our current laptop onto the new one. We woud like to save all these pictures from the old PC's onto an online storage site, and then re-download them onto the new PC.  Shutterfly, flickr, and snapfish do not allow yo do redownlod the photos once you upload them.  it would be Grand if i could do a "bulk" upload, and "bulk" download also..

Any recommendations?

Re: store picture online- with download available

  • I had to do the same thing. Easiest way to do it, like PP said is to get a thumb drive. My old comp took so long to do anything internet wise so that was a no go for me. We got a thumb drive for like $10 and put everything we wanted onto it then loaded it on the new comp. Good news is that if you keep it on the t.d. it will always be there even if your comp crashes or something happens to it. It was def worth the 10$ not to wonder if i uploaded everything correctly to the net or not, plus pic quality stays the same.

  • i'd get an external harddrive.  I have one and I just plugged it in to my old computer and it backed up everything and then attached it to my new laptop and i can drag anything i went on to the new laptop... and it is backed up on the hard drive as a secondary backup.

I assume if you say it will cost a grand there are a LOT. they now have external harddrives with Terrabites that are not too expensive. Definitely less than a grand.  a thumb drive may take forever if you have thousands of pictures unless you get a really large thumb drive.

  • Duh! I didnt even consider a thumb drive. that is an excellent idea. Thanks ladies:)
  • You can also try online storage sites like dropbox but thumbdrives would be much quicker.  Depending on your camera I would guess that any online photo site that is free would only let you download something that is much lesser resolution than you would upload.
  • Huh, I had to double check re: not being able to download images from Flickr.

I did exactly this in bulk when we used them for wedding photo sharing in 2009.   I guess the program I used is now illegal:

Yeah, thumb drive or external hard drive is the way to go.  You can use the external hard drive for data back-up once you're set up on your new computer.

  • Go to www.smugmug.com

They have a free option and a pro option.

You can decide if you want it downloadable or not.

    THey are very helpful.
