Do you still get Birthday Presents?

Do you still get Birthday Presents from your family?  Even though you are an adult?

My family is pretty big on Birthdays, we always go out for dinner with the family and get a present no matter how old we are.

Birthday's in DH's family are just another day.  No dinners out or presents.  I find that really strange, but then thought, maybe my family are the weird ones!?!

What's the norm in your family?

Re: Do you still get Birthday Presents?

  • Hi,

I think your in-laws are not in the normal category when it comes to this.  My family ALWAYS sends a birthday gift.  Even my terrible in-laws send hubby a present (we send it back) on his birthday.

  • This year it wasn't as big of a deal because it was the same month as the wedding. My mom gave me a giftcard to Banana Republic & MIL kept asking me what I wanted -- I didn't want for anything at the time, but later found a purse I wanted & she bought it for me. Other than that, DH and I went out to dinner, he got me roses, and I got cards from friends. I kinda like keeping things low key, esp. this year after the wedding craziness.

  • This year my birthday was pretty low key. Everyone was partied out since it was two weeks after the wedding. My parents got me a small gift aswell as my IL. And my Grandparents sent card like they do every year. And DH got me a new camera since we lost ours on our honeymoon. And we went out for sushi ( my favorite).

  • I don't get actual gifts anymore. My family just sends money, which is much appreciated. Darren's family sometimes sends him something, but not always. They sometimes send me something too, but again not always. *shrug*
  • Hmm, seems presents are still the norm.

The question came about because it was D/H's Birthday on the 10th, and he seemed quite disappointed with the lame card his parents sent him.  He isn't gift grabby at all, I think it just hurt his feelings a little that they didn't make the time to come and see him or buy him a new screwdriver.

I made sure he felt special on the day with a big cooked dinner and some little presents, and my friend baked him a massive cake.  He seemed so surprised that we fussed over him.  He is going to get an ever Bigger surprise when he sees the surprise party my family is planning for him when we are home next month.  :)

  • I guess we are on the other side of things.  We don't do birthday cards or presents for any of the grown-ups.  We do celebrate the nieces and nephews birthdays.  H's birthday is next month, and we will go out to dinner or something like that, but nothing big.  I think maybe it's because we both grew up in big families - there would just be way too many people to shop for.

  • My family is very into birthday gifts, while DH's family always gets him a gift, but in the 5 years we've been together, I think they've gotten me a birthday gift about every other year.  My family has always gotten DH a birthday gift, even when we were dating, and they still get me birthday gifts.  I don't know if DH's family was just never aware of my birthday or what, but I don't know if things will change now that we're married or not.
