Desired salary on job application
I'm filling out an online job application that requires a desired salary amount. It will only take a number. It will not take a range. I have no idea what number to give.
Th position is compliance coordinator at a non-profit. I've looked at salary ranges for similar positions online and it ranges from $25k - $100k at for-profit companies. While I haven't found salaries for non-profits, I know it will be at the lower end. I don't want to put too low or a high a number and hurt my chances. This has to be the most stressful job hunting question.
Any suggestions?

All nonprofits are required to report the salaries of their top 5 paid employees on their IRS 990 forms. These forms can be found for any nonprofit nationwide at guidestar.com. You just have to sign up for a free account.
If the executive director or president is making $100,000, I would assume director level positions make between $60-80,000 and managers make between $45-50,000 and coordinators between $30-45,000. That's just a general pay scale. If the executive director makes closer to $200,000, those numbers could go up a little. But the 990 will give you a litmus for how they pay their staff.
Wow, thanks for this information! It will definitely be helpful in my job search.
It looks like form 990 only requires the top 5 who make over $100k. I'm surprised that this particular nonprofit didn't have anyone who earned over that amount.

While I have never run into this situation personally, I am a studying to earn a degree in business management with a concentration in HR and have been personally told by the head of the HR department only to respond to this question with "open." This shows that you are willing to negotiate an appropriate salary for you after making sure that the job is for you.
