Social Life

When I was single and lived in Florida it was very hard to meet people and have a social life. I was wondering what you as a couple do and had some suggestions based on what we do.

I ended up meeting a lady from Houston at work and when I was on long term travel there I met some of her friends. Turns out about 10 women get together two Monday nights a month. They take turns hosting it at their house. They call it project session and sometimes bring a project to work on. I held one a few weeks before the wedding and they helped make my wedding favors. Every December we get together with our spouses for a dinner (out) and cookie exchange at someone's house. They have been doing this for over 25 years.

Our neighbors (3 other houses) get together almost every Saturday morning at someones house for coffee. Sometimes we make something for breakfast or pick up something. Since all the houses in the neighborhood were built by the same builder, it helps having someone to help answer questions about the house or construction. 2 are original owners and 2 of us just bought a couple years ago. we even ended up with an impromptu cookout last night at our house. Everyone contributed something.

Just wanted to make a few suggestions and get you thinking about some traditions with friends and neighbors.

What do you do to keep in touch with friends?

Re: Social Life

  • I have a couple friends who I still get together with from college...when we are together we usually work on a project, cook, swap recipes, play Trivial Pursuit and just talk for hours...oh and there is always a trip to the book store and usually a dinner out in the weekend ;-) It sounds weird and old lady like but we love it...

  • Well, I have only lived in this city since last April, so I don't have a ton of friends here.  Home is 5 hours away, so I keep up with my friends with e-mail/Facebook/etc.  Matt has a few friends here and they have become my friends, but I need a wider friend circle.  Especially since Matt works lots of evenings/weekends and I am a social person by nature.  So Matt and I are getting more involved in our church.  We started going to a small group (Bible study type thing) and met several nice couples there.  I also joined a couples Meetup, but we haven't made it to that yet.  I honestly think it will be a little easier for me once we have kids, as I can join some mom's groups and "use" my babies as conversation starters.
