Zumba Classes

Have any of you tried a Zumba class? I have been considering trying one and wanted some feedback. People say that they love it and I think it'd be a fun way to shed a few pounds. My mom and best friend said they'd join me if I went...any classes around the WBL area?

Re: Zumba Classes

  • My best friend takes Zumba at the Shoreview community center. She's not a member, you can just pay for like 8 weeks of classes at a time or something like that. She loves it! I know they also offer it at the YMCA.

  • While I've never tried it, I know that they also offer it at the Maplewood Community Center.

  • A high school classmate of mine is an instructor and she's crazy buff now!!  She teaches it for Lifetime Fitness in the south metro I believe.  Anyway - because it is sorta dance focused, they've been bringing it into clubs and stuff.  How fun!!
  • I go to a class at the Y every now and then.  It's definitely fun and you forget you're working out.  You should give it a try!

i don't know anything about zumba but when i was in a band and dancing for 3-4 hours at a time twice a week, i was in the best shape of my life. you'd think that just dancing wouldn't be that great of a workout but it sure is!

i'd like to try zumba out sometime. it looks fun!

  • I want to try it as I have just heard great things about it.
  • I.LOVE.ZUMBA!

I go to classes at the YMCA.  All the Y's offer them,so if you are a member, there you go!

You totally forget that you are working out and its just so dang FUN!  And I have two left feet, and still totally love it.

  • I've tried it, and honestly it wasn't for me...but I really want to "get" something from my work out and so I am better in classes that are hard cardio or strength.  I wore my heart rate monitor to the zumba clas and I never cracked 100 bpm, and in my mind that's a waste of a good hour for me.  I decided to stick with my other classes.

  • I've taken Zumba several times and I love it.  I'm a memer at Gold's Gym and they have Zumba a couple times a week now.

Really?  Last time I went to Zumba, and wore my HRM, I burned over 1000 calories!  My heart rate was high and I was sweaty and definitely got a workout.  maybe the instructor just didn't do have high tempo enough music...?  Like any class, it can be totally dependent on the instructor.  Some are definately better than others.  (not every class is for every person too)

I don't know, she was a real high energy instructor and I've heard good things about her but in an hour i only burned about 120 calories...

Mind you my resting heart rate is between 49-54 bpm so it takes A LOT to get my heart rate up there.  It takes me about 30 minutes of running at 6.5mph or more to get my heartrate over 150, and in my cardio kickboxing class I usually only burn about 550 calories, so its all relative I guess.

  • I don't care for it either, but that may be because I spent more time trying to figure out the moves than actually getting a good workout.  I went to the very first class at Highland Park Lifetime, with an instructor who is super fit and high energy (and popular--classes now require tickets), but it just didn't do it for me.  I stick to cycling classes now.  Many people love it, though.
  • I'm not a member of any gym so that kind of sucks, but thanks for the replies! Maybe we'll try out the one at the Shoreview Community Center! I'm so excited :)

  • FYI - gold's gym is running a special til the end of the month.  $14.99/mo or $19.99/mo if you want to take classes.  No contract and $50 down.  It's a great deal and they have Zumba.

  • I'm a Zumba fanatic! Love it. Haven't done it in a while though; had to give up my membership because of being too busy, but I'm hoping to get back in the class soon.
