Boston Nestie looking for some help/advice
Hi Ladies!!
My H and I currently live in the Boston area and are (hopefully) moving back to Atlanta this summer. H and I met there and lived there for 3 years before we moved up here. Anyway, we really miss it and want to get back to the area and make Atlanta our home, raise our kids there and really just plant some roots.
Anyway, H is a teacher. He is currently licensed in MA to teach Physical Education but has been working for the past 3 years as an ed assistant in special ed (high school and middle school). We're working on getting his resumes out to a bunch of different schools he'd be interested in working at and he's been on teachgeorgia and some of the county websites.
For those of you who are teachers, when do hirings start happening? Any suggestions on the best way to apply for jobs? Are we crazy to think that he'll get hired with us living up here?
Our goal is to move right around June 1 - we're desperate to move back. Every day we get home from work and talk about how bad we want to move. So any help or advice we can get would be greatly appreciated!

Hi! If I were your H I would contact the principals at the schools he is interested in now and just let them know he'd like a job if any positions are available. Most counties will list career fairs on their websites but to be honest, not many are hiring. My mom works in Gwinnett county but has been told that she will be unemployed at the end of the year b/c she's already technically retired. Gwinnett is opening a couple new schools next year but claim they will be staffing all new schools with teachers already on contract and that no hiring will be done. I don't see how they can open several new schools with no hiring though.

Hi! I used to teach PE in one of the local school systems but am back in school right now. I don't want to be Debbie Downer here, but like pp said, not many schools are hiring. Especially in PE. It is a bonus that he has been working in special ed as he might have an easier time finding a job in that area. The two websites you mentioned are good starting points. You might also want to check into a regional job fair where all the counties will be present. Typically in this area, if you go to a job fair where multiple counties are present, the county will hire you and then you can start contacting schools. For most districts, you can't just contact the school you want to work at because they can't hire you until the county has hired you, but you'll want to contact the school districts to check.
FWIW, Atlanta Public Schools is in the middle of a cheating scandal, Clayton County has lost their accreditation, and Dekalb County has been locked in a scandal with their schoolboard and superintendent.

I don't know much about the school systems here since we haven't been here that long, but I do know National Heritage Academies is going to be hiring for next year and they have several fairs coming up at the end of this month and into March. They're a great school (they used to be one of my clients when I lived in MI...they're based out of Grand Rapids) and take really good care of their employees...it might be worth checking into.
But I agree in that he just start contacting the counties/schools he would be interested in to find out their process of hiring, when it happens and what may be available. I'd also tell him to be very candid with your situation so they know ahead of time and give the proper advice based on that.

I'm not sure if there is a true hiring season aside from between semesters. In all honesty, my husband says August is the busiest month for sure, when they're scrambling. I would go ahead and apply to the counties where you'd like to live and have him put his resume in the bank. However, it's pretty bleak, very few are hiring. As an example of such, my husband has 3 HS classes right now, one has 32, one has 39 and one has 41 students. so he's basically teaching 4-5 classes worth of kids in 3 periods. Oh, and only 29 desks, so that's awesome.
I hate to shoot down your dreams, and just apply where you can, but I don't think the fact that your living up there will hurt your chances, I just don't think there's much of a chance as no one is hiring. Best of luck, though!
