Random, but...job search Q

DH and I have been going back and fourth about this but what do you all think?

 

When applying for jobs online, after you send in a resume, should you follow-up with a phone call or email or not at all? 

 

Also, if you say phone call, how do you go about finding the appropriate number/person to contact?

  • I actually heard a career coach talk about this on Martha Stewart Radio a few months ago and she said to always follow up with a hard copy of your resume.  Many ads say "no phone calls" and if they do it's best to follow that.  Otherwise, she said it was ok to followup with one "did you receive my resume" phone call.

    I would do this.  It never hurts for them to see your face, unless there is something specifically stated in the ad.

  • I would not follow up at all. If you would like to contact someone then finding the decision makers in that company on LinkedIn could be helpful. Every company is different so its hard to give advice on this. I'm in HR and I hate when people show up without an appointment. It wouldn't ruin your chances but you never know what kind of response you will get.
  • Being in IT unless a hard copy is specifically asked for, I only email the resume.

    I completely agree with this.  I used to work in HR/Recruiting and there is a reason they specify no phone calls.  When people didn't abide by that, I would get bombarded with calls/emails non-stop and that time adds up when you have to respond to every.single.one, which takes away from doing the actual job itself!  It also shows that you don't take direction well and do what you want anyway...it's really annoying!  I'm just being honest...I hated when people would contact me when I specified not to.

    This. Plus, if the listing was found online, I keep all communication via email unless a phone # is provided.

  • Haha...good thing I'm not applying for a job right now!  When I was applying for teaching positions, you HAD to make follow-up calls with the schools to see if they even got the resume. Filing this info away for the future...Smile
