Ikea...love it or hate it?
I love, love, love Ikea because I'm cheap, but the quality of their furniture kinda sucks. I love going to the store in EPA (East Palo Alto) and just walking around and looking at all their products.
I was looking at a bed frame and it's cheap, $199, but I'm wondering if it will hold up and for how long.

My BFF got this bed and it was a b(*&h to put together but I think it's held up well. She hasn't said anything that it has fallen apart or what not, I don't think you can use a boxspring though, just the mattress itself.
I've seen a few dining tables online that I like but don't want the cheap particle, veneer stuff, want a real wood dining table to eventually upgrade to.

Don and I stopped at the one in northern VA on our way home from NY once...it was nice to look around and we saw stuff we liked, but just too much $$$.
Wow, that's a great price! We just bought the Hemnes 8-drawer dresser for me, and it's awesome. But it was more expensive than the bed, which is weird.
I'm in between (love and hate) on Ikea. A lot of the stuff is very modern, which isn't our style. I'm very picky about what I buy there, and have to go look at it carefully, to make sure it doesn't look like pressed wood.
Ditto this - I think this is how most of their bed frames work. I looked a few years ago and didn't buy one because of that, so I just used a metal frame thingy for years. We recently bought this awesome Pottery Barn leather headboard on Craig's List, though.
Oh gosh, where do I start. I loved IKEA and have been a complete advocate for them even more since our entire apartment is furnished in IKEA (with the exception of our two couches) and it was under $2k.. tv stand, coffee table, side table, desk, kitchen table + 4 chairs, a chaise, two dressers with glass tops, comfiest mattress of my life + boxspring, and queen bed with the coolest headboard ever.
It's the MALM bed with slide out headboard.. so it basically doubles as our bedside tables.
And I cannot friggin' recommend our mattress enough (SULTAN HJELM?S pillowtop) - it is heaven.
Yeah, it is definitely a b!tch to put the furniture together, but that's what friends are for

im with steff. however, i might be concerned about the lack of box spring...unless you get a super comfy ikea mattress too!

You have the option of either a box spring or wooden/fancy slats with most IKEA beds.. We prefer the boxspring.

I love Ikea too, but yes, the quality isn't the best.
I think it's great for starting out. When you get nicer pieces or move into a larger house, you can always move your Ikea stuff into a guest bedroom or basement.

I don't mind their side tables, entertainment centers, bookcases as far as furniture goes. I would not buy bed frames or mattresses, kitchen cabinets/counters, or couches from there.
I actually think Target has some good cheap options for dressers and such.
Richard is soooo good at putting together Ikea furniture.
I personally don't like Ikea. DH still has his Ikea desk from his old bedroom before we moved in together, and it definately stands out from the rest of our furniture as looking a little flimsy. I'd love to update our home office space with a nice solid wood desk for him and then we won't have any Ikea furniture at all.
I do see why people love the store though and agree that it's great for people just starting out or a teenager room / college dorm.
I think IKEA is great for certain things, and I agree with whoever recommended that you should look at it in-person. Some of the cheaper stuff is totally a get-what-you-pay for thing, but there are a couple items that I think are a little over-priced for particle board, while others actually look pretty nice. I actually don't mind putting the stuff together, though their instructions are sort of bizarre. Their cheaper stuff is good for beginner items that you can upgrade in the future, and I believe they actually have some pretty nice kitchen options but the nice ones are fairly pricey so you might as well go with a better brand at Home Depot or Lowe's for the money.
We have a ton of IKEA furniture, but personally I wouldn't get a bed or couch from there. I've found their cushion-y items to be rather uncomfortable and we've gotten a nice couch and mattress by shopping around and hitting up sales. I don't know about the quality or how long it will last. I'm sure we'll replace our coffee/end tables and desk at some point, but unless we go a completely different direction with our style I think we'll probably keep the bookcases forever because they're pretty basic and nonoffensive.
