cloth diaper moms

so I'm reasonably sure we're going to CD at least at home.

I've been doing some research (not too busy at my new job yet, ha!) and I'm thinking prefolds/covers until they fit into OS pockets or All in Ones. Thoughts/preferences? I was thinking of ordering a few to take a look at, because we want to try to build a stash via sales over the next few months.

Re: cloth diaper moms

  • We did pre-folds until B was too big for the smallest size (And too squirmy to lay still long enough for folding them) and now we use Bum Genius pockets and a couple BG AIOs. I think I'm going to sell our AIOs though. I like the pockets a bit better.

I LOVE our BGs though. And I also have a few Fuzzibunz one size but B is too skinny still to fit in them well. I still have an email that Becky sent me with tons of info on CDs if you want me to send it to you. :)

Do you have any specific questions?

  • I love my CDs and we do prefolds and covers at home and save the AIO and pockets for daycare and the diaper bag. The prefolds are a little more challenging to get on her now that she is more active but you can't beat the price as far as cost savings go. By doing the prefolds for the newborn stage will be nice because then you can use those prefolds as doublers and liners after the babies out grow them.

Most of my daycare stash is Fuzzibunz OS pockets, they are easy to use and adjust. I have a few Kawaii diapers, they are cheap and cute and function well. I really like my DreamEze, now GroVia AIO, and the BumGenius Organics, BUT they take forever to dry i usually let them air dry but I know you won't have time to do that with multiples. I also like my GroVia Hybrid diapers. I only have the cloth soakers but I have never had any issues with them at all. I can easily keep a few extra soakers in the diaper bag and not use as much space.

If you do prefolds definitely get snappis for securing them, especially for that infant size. I did love my thirsties fab fitteds for the newborn time, they kept in messes and were easy to velcro on for late night changes. They were also pretty trim. I could make a huge post about feedback from all my different diapers if you are interested; but in the interest of keeping it "short" I will stop here. Smile

please do! my emails on FB.

did you try different brands out before making a choice to go mostly with the bumgenius? I've read people prefer the pockets...do you use the old prefolds for extra stuffing?

  • thanks heidi! that's terrific your day care takes them :)

I'm really interested in CDs to keep costs down (well, and the whole landfill thing and the weird smell of disposables) but I'm trying to be realistic about squirmy babies so I know prefolds are going to not be so great after the early months (good idea on fitteds for night). Do you use snaps or aplix?

I feel like a nut looking into this so early but I really want to start stalking for good deals!

  • hmm , well does C plan to Breastfeed?

If so prefolds *could* get messy. But they are for sure the cheapest.

Personally we do fitteds/covers which are cheaper than pockets/AIO's.

We used Kissaluvs Size 0 and Swaddlebees  fitteds for the newborn stage

Then/now we use Mother Ease Sandy's she's still in the first size but we have the second size. They are workhorse diapers and cheap (about 11 a piece)

For covers we used Sized Thirsties covers

I'd get the XS Mother Ease Sandy's if I needed more because we just love them.

That being said, they will probably be small, so you'll definitely need either preemie/nb of whatever diapers you need.

OS diapers are good if you are thinking about this being all that you will have, otherwise I'd look into sized  because they hold up better.

Also if you are doing it full time you are looking at 10-12 diapers a day/per kiddo in the newborn stage. Lucy is down to 6 or so a day now

  • I love prefolds with covers, and for daycare they used the BumGenius.  I prefer the BG AIO organics and also the pockets, although like someone said they do take a while to dry.  I really liked thirsties fitted with a cover (Brendan friendly) when P was little.  We didn't start until he was 4 months or so, and we've been lazy lately (I need to strip due to a yeast rash).  Prefolds are much easier to use on a baby that doesn't run around yet!  I have other random diapers, too, that I tried.  I also got fitteds from GMD that were made from their prefolds.  We really like those, too.

If I was having multiples, I would absolutely stock up on prefolds.

I breastfed P and we never once had an issue with a prefold.  And breastfed babies' poop washes out so easily.  There are many different folds to try, I found it just took practice.

That being said, for the next one, I'll probably invest in more fitteds.

Also, our daycare does prefolds and covers.

I liked aplix because P is so skinny that I had a hard time getting the snaps to fit well.

  • Thanks guys - good point on the easy of fitteds. I did a lot of my research thinking one baby and didn't consider the size issue...some tiny fitteds to go with the prefolds might make sense until they can fit into the bigger diapers. That extra month of small-ness would justify the cost...

I was thinking OS but Christina you raised a good point regarding wear - I wonder if it would be best to go with a smaller stash of sized diapers than a bigger OS stash...

    hm...

thanks for all the feedback. there's just SO much to look at.

I guess the whole finding a fold is what freaks me out. I LOVED our fitteds, I preferred snaps though because there are 2 sets of snaps which helps if they are skinny

It's funny how many people have different experiences in cloth

It is funny. I love fitteds, too, but prefolds were cheaper so we went with those.  The folds just took some practice.

I'm really glad you said you liked your fitteds, because when you started I already had my stash for P and didn't want to add anything unless I knew it was good, but next time around I'll probably be looking for more.   I'll definitely look into the ones you suggested.

The swaddlebees (the newborn ones) were small, I would say they only fit her until 9 lbs or so, the KL0's were definitely better as far as sizing, they fit her all the way up to 12/13 lbs or so.

And seriously even though the ME Sandy's aren't the trimmest diaper , they aren't that big  AND they are soooooo reasonably priced and we got them used (after 1 kiddo) and they are still holding up great and Lucy has been in them since about 3 weeks after she was born. She's still got a LOT of room in them. A whole snap setting on her tummy and her legs.

Can't beat the quality and they still are going strong.

A curiosity question: how often/long do you do laundry for the diapers?

Using cloth seems really appealing based on all the info and recommendations I've seen on here. But we have an HE washer and even a normal load takes about an hour to do (plus dry time). I'm just not sure if it is a feasible option for us time-wise.

HE washer's can be tricky from what I've read, we have a TLer, do you have a way to add extra water? That is what a lot of mom's do. Also if you can program a pre rinse, a wash and an extra rinse it will probably be fine.

Hanging them works well for drying and you can also throw in clean towels (that are dry ) to help them dry faster

    I wash T, R, Sat and I have about 21 diapers

I'm not necessarily interested in trim - I like a fluffy bottom!  Plus, as you and I talked about before, if you have a skinny kid the diaper helps fill the pants in!

Our washer died when I was about 37 weeks pregnant, so we bought a top loading HE with the function to add extra water and do extra rinse cycles specifically for doing diaper laundry.  Does your washer have any of those features?  Even when he was going through a dozen diapers a day, we did wash every 2-3 days. It really didn't seem to add too much extra in addition to normal extra baby laundry.

There is a pre-wash (which I could just not add soap to), not sure about the extra rinse. I'm just thinking that if a normal wash is an hour, then with the extra rinses and drying it could be 2 hours+ for 1 load. But 3 days a week isn't bad at all. I was worried it would be a daily activity (for 1 child).

We have a HE frontloader. Obviously I haven't washed diapers, but I always presoak when I wash muddy jerseys (which can be really, really gross). Mine has a soak or prewash or something like that cycle which takes like 25 min. I figured with diapers we could use that, then set it for the wash+ extra rinse (which I always use). I usually do laundry in the evening so its really just  matter of starting it before dinner and restarting it.

I used aplix I thought it was better for getting a more secure fit when she was small. For Covers I really like the Bummis Super Brights sized and the Thirsties sized with aplix. I have some thristies duos with snaps and I am not a huge fan, I find it harder to get a good fit.

I totally started looking at CDs as soon as I found out I was pregnant so I don't think you are nuts. Definitely check out the CD board on the bump, they usually post about when certain places are offering sales and discount codes. I think Spots Swap on hyena cart is an area people will list used diapers for sale. Most have barely been used so you can usually score some good deals.

EDIT NOTE: I should add that my OS AIO and pockets are all snaps. I love the snaps for those!

  • Emily YGM - from my Yahoo.

We have a combo of snaps and velcro and I am finding now that I like the snaps much more. B has started to undo the velcro already if she doesn't have clothes on for too long. Plus I'm finding the fit the same. As far as looks I think they look nicer. Some of our velcro is already a disaster and she has only been in them for 5-6 months. Some of them not as long.

I did a registry with a local CD store and the BGs were something I got off the registry. I did have others on their as well but didn't recieve those. I just kinda lucked out that we liked them I think.

I meant to add earlier that we also used some fitteds as a nb and only at night because they were so much more absorbant than the pfs.

Any other questions let us know!
