Moving to Corning

We will be relocating to Corning, NY from Houston, TX in 13 days. We visited a couple of weeks ago, and it is not the big city. What do you do with the kiddos with that weather? How do you get to know people if everyone is stuck in doors (is everyone stuck indoors?)?

Re: Moving to Corning

  • I live in NYC, but grew up in the cold country of WI. Bundle the kiddos up well, go sledding, build snowmen. Usually there are some popular public sledding places. It's a lot of fun. I loved doing that growing up. I don't know how old your kids are, but there are usually a lot of activities and organizations in a not-so-big city. Scouts, sports, things at the university, high school. Start with the glass museum and show.

i say this with all due respect, and no sarcasm whatsoever... but i need to tell you how offensive i find your post.

opening a conversation with your potential new neighbors by lodging complaints about our weather and how hard you think it's going to be is rude.  it is passive aggression at its best, which is generally not well-regarded in...ahem...these parts.

that said, this is the board specifically for new york city.  if you are moving to corning, you should really lodge said complaints on the upstate new york board, because corning is considered upstate.

  • Indeed, Corning ? big city.  That is a very astute observation. However, it's not like it's a black hole.  I am sure your kids will associate with other children who have all managed to keep themselves busy despite lacking some of the resources afforded to you in Houston. Corning is home to the beautiful glass museum, an art museum, many great restaurants, etc.

Central NY is lovely, especially with the different seasons.  The Finger Lakes region is one of the most beautiful, lush areas in the country.  Trails, lakes, and more.  Kids and adults are probably outdoors more than in Houston. Hiking, apple-picking, swimming, boating, bicycling, team sports, skiiing, ... and all in the fresh air.

At any rate, once you get settled, get involved with other parents and families.  They will be a great resource for what's going on in that area. I grew up in Syracuse, about 90 minutes away, and I was never a bored child and spent most of my time doing fun things and not cooped up in my home.
