Stinky Couch and Dresser

Hi! I'm hoping that someone here can help me out. Our couch smells like a basement! We had to store it in my grandparents basement for a few months and now it reeks. I have febreezed it, vaccumed it, and sat it out in the sun. Any other ideas? We currently have a wind advisory so I have pinned everything down and sat it outside with the hopes that some of the smell will blow out. Any suggestions?

Oh, and problem number 2, how do you remove smoke smell from wood? We bought 2 dressers at a sale and never smelled anything until we got them home. Now they smell too.

We have one interesting smelling apartment huh!?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Stinky Couch and Dresser

  • Do you think it might be mold in the couch?  We stored a lounge chair for my uncle after my grandma passed.  Our living room is really sunny and the odor never completely went away, although I admit I didn't try particularly hard because I wasn't keeping it.

If the cushion covers are removable, I would take them off and wash them.  You could also try a steamer.

Have you tried a wood cleaner?  Or you could get lucky washing them with baking soda.  At worst, you could salvage them by painting with Kilz.

  • I suppose it could be mold. We have aired it outside several times and tried baking soda on it as well

As far as the dressers go I can't paint them. I have tried wood cleaner but maybe I could try wiping them down with a b.s. solution. Good idea
