Re: beemer

  • Hehehe my nestie nick name has a nick name LOL...

Um it would have never in a million years dawned on me that "over a friends house" should be said "over to a friends house" LOL! Thats funny. Feel free to point out other merylnder vernacular as you see it, it interest me!

I swore up and down as a kid I'd never say Hon. OMG I saw it all the time!!

Have you ever read the MR Ducks poem?? I sent it to Madame when we did the home state exchange this summer.

  • he grew up in college park so thankfully he avoided the hun thing! when i met him (i lived in colorado at the time and i am from california) i thought he had such an accent! now i dont hear it at all. but my sister came out here from california and thought his family totally have accents. i guess your ear gets used to it. i will tell you if i "hear" any other maryland speak in your posts. i think i have read other stuff too that has made me chuckle.

  • Back when AIM was really popular I was talking to this guy form up state NY. We eventually  started talking on the phone and I thought it was hysterical when he told me I had an accent!!

Here is the MR Ducks poem... I am no where near as bad as this though lol.

The story goes that two duck hunters in a duck blind on Maryland's Eastern Shore were looking skyward when this friendly exchange occurred... For those unfamiliar with the distinct dialect of the Eastern Shore, what the two hunters were saying was...
    M.R. Ducks
    M. R. Not
    O. S. A. R.
    C. M. Wangs
    L. I. B.
    M. R. Ducks
    Them are ducks.
    Them are not.
    Oh, yes, they are.
    See them wings?
    Well, I'll be.
    Them are ducks.

  • i think we r the only ones "here" btw! yeah h doesnt sound like that poem thank god. his mom and he do this weird thing though where they dont say h's when they are say "hu" words. so like huge is pronounced "yuge". my mil used to talk about this church she went to called st. u's and it wasnt until years later that i realized she was saying st. hugh's. i dont know if that's a maryland thing or if they are just weird.

  • I definitely pronounce my H's.  What part of MD are they from? I think southern MD, eastern shore, and baltimore metro all sound different.

Older people who grew up in different parts of Baltimore city prounounce thinks differently too.Especially those from Highland Town/Greek Town. I use to laugh every time my mom's mom would say Bread. I can't even try to say it the way she did. It was kind of like  bri-ed, but not quite there was another vow sound in the middle. My FIL says Merylend, doiter (daughter) in law and there are a few other things I can't think of right now.

Now my dad's gmom says things funny too but I dont think it has anything to do with being from maryland or baltimore. She often talks with this awful high society meets boston accent. Like pillow= pillar, car = cah, The Dundalk Eagle = Dundock (now thats a Dundalk thing) Agel, Italian =Eyetalian. etc
