nest rudeness vent

There is this chick on the national boards that is constantly correcting people's spelling and word usage. She makes separate posts for them.

It just bothers me to no end that she would call people out like that. We have no idea if English is someone's second language or if they only have 9th grade education. Does that mean they shouldn't be able to ask for a salon rec or relationship advice? I think not.

Yes, I cringe when I see people use the "word" alot, and I've been told that without knowing it I make a visible face when people use the "word" funner...but I don't make fun of people for it.

Maybe I'm more sympathetic because I have a four year degree in Public Relations,  but I feel like I have lost a lot of my writing skills due to my job as a receptionist. All day long I say the same four phrases, and I never get to compose an e-mail longer than four lines.

BUT here's the kicker, this chick spelled y'all like ya'll. If you are going to make fun of people, you should at least know the definition of a contraction and how to do one, right?

Vent Over.

  • This is exactly why I don't post on the national boards. They are just plain scary. Although really bad grammer does irk me, like you said, you never know the person's background.

  • Grr... Angry I hate that, too.

Any form of grammar police (to me) smacks of elitism and malice. People make mistakes, but it's far more unattractive to call them out and make them feel like an idiot in front of everyone. Besides, I've typo'd enough "yours" and "your's" in my time to not throw any stones in that department.

  • I've just learned to ignore some people that consistently rub me the wrong way. Even though they drive me crazy, I don't let them stop me from participating in something I'm interested in.

    This exactly.

  • I think it's sad that people are so "big and brave" behind a computer screen.  I think people take the opportunity to use words to hurt people when they have no CLUE where that person is coming from.  Sadly, so many people assume everyone came from the same place/experience.

I struggle with how much/what I post anywhere online because I know I tend to be more sensitive about responses - and with boards like this... you never know what kind of response you're going to get.

this.  i read the national boards consistently (money matters esp.), but i will sometimes get irked by "ladies" who respond to posters by being "straightforward and frank" when they're really just being giant douchebags.

i saw a graphic once that kind of sums up most of the national boards for me.  i can't find it right now, but it said something like "internet connection + anonymity + audience = a$$hole".

  • Ugh, I cannot stand that. I am a big stickler for grammar and spelling, but we all make mistakes and I would never correct anyone who I'm not paid to correct for the benefit of their education (e.g. my students). Correcting others for sport = bad manners.
