Vacation?

Where should we go on vacation? Probably sometime in April, May, June or July. I think we have miles to use, so it could be drivable or flyable.... Has to be Finley friendly... Any ideas?

Re: Vacation?

  • A few questions first ...

How long do you have for the vacation?
Major city or somewhere more secluded?
    US or international?
How much time are you willing to spend getting there/back?

  • A few places I would really like to go this summer are San Fransisco, Portland, ME, Portland, OR, and Upstate New York.  I don't know how kid friendly any of those are though.

I think the money will be the limiting factor, not the time off - so probably a week give or take a few days.

We typically like to do more relaxing than sightseeing on our trips. And I'd say no more than one day travel time each way (unless it's a car trip, maybe we'd break down a long drive to two days) since I don't think fin will be excited to sit still.

We were originally thinking of renting a house in north or south carolina, but I'd love to do something more exciting than that if we can make it work :)

  • find a vacation last year that was family friendly wasn't as easy as i thought it was going to be. biggest bang for our buck was renting a home for a week through vrbo.com. we chose an area 30 miles out from Charelston, SC so that we'd be close to a city but far enough away that we didn't have to be there everyday. the beach was important to us, as was warm (HOT) weather. and really, we just wanted to relax....so the main attraction for us was quiet, slow-paced, and also an environment where being back at home by 6pm to feed a toddler and get him to bed was ok.

the drive was about 11 hrs and we decided to split it up in 2 days on the way there. i was REALLY nervous about the drive bc bennett was about 13 months old and was just getting to the point where sometimes he was ok in the car and others he did NOT want to be strapped in. we borrowed my dad's portable dvd player and took the recommendation of friends and bought a Yo Gabba Gabba DVD. bennett was LITERALLY mesmerized by it. we didnt even NEED to stop halfway on the way there...he did great! but we did bc we had the time. :) on the way home, we drove straight through and that was fine also!

biggest suggestion...the car will be PACKED. we got a car-top carrier to hold strollers, pack n play, etc. stuff that didnt need to be touched til we got there. then, i also packed just a small overnight bag that i kept in the backseat that had our swimsuits, jammies and a change of clothes for B, and toilettries for our hotel stay on the way down. that way, we didnt have to through the car to find stuff. GREAT plan, if i do say so myself :)

the northeast is a neat place to drive around and visit...as a child we took a trip and drove from here to New Hampshire and Maine and there is some great hiking in N.H. really neat little towns to stop in, and it would be a neat place to go if you want to move around a lot. but, with a baby, that might be hard.

florida might be pretty affordable with all the houses down there that people are unable to sell. you could go somewhere on either coast to be on the beach and then head to orlando for disney? not sure if Fin would be into that yet.

we loved SC...charleston is a great historical city to visit. we stayed in Seabrook Island, which was a 30 min drive to the city and is a gated golf community. we can't afford to golf there, but the houses are incredible and it's pretty upscale. we know it's safe and VERY family oriented. we're going again this summer wiht my dad and my sister along too.

i'm a big east coast person....it's hard to travel west for me bc it takes up your whole day to to get there and get back. time changes are hard, even on babies. plus, i think it's pricier.

    hope that helps!

  • The OBX are a good pick (I like Duck, NC)-- not a jammin' nightlife, but lots of outdoor activities-- kites, bike trails, the beach, of course! There's a nice aquarium nearby too.

If you're looking for more of a city, Savannah's lovely.  It's generally friendly (don't have kids, so not too sure about kid-friendly stuff).  Some great dining options.

If you like camping-- some of the Nat'l Parks have very budget friendly cabins (ie running water, bathrooms, and beds, so you're not in a tent w/ a toddler).  I've stayed at the ones on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.  Loved it!  There's also a Lodge, where you can get breakfast/dinner, if you don't want to cook your own.  I haven't stayed at there, but believe Yosemite and Yellowstone have them too.

  • Obviously we did the same thing as Buckswife last year. Audrey loved it. We loved having a house (easy with feeding her, naps, etc). Seabrook is amazing and so is Charleston. It is a great place to vacation. I cannot rave enough about it.. but I think that bucks going back there this year is a testament to how fabulous it was. We hung out at the beach, the pool, drove into the city to shop and sightsee. It was really nice having another couple there with kids. As you can see, Bucks is going back with family and I think that is a great idea. Hopefully they can steal away for couple dinners at some of the places we were wanting to try down there that we couldn't take the kids. We hope to visit there again some time but it is not in the budget this year with our plumbing crisis.

We have rented condos in destin, fl before and loved it there. I have been wanting to take DH down to the gulf side since he has never been.

If you are looking super low key, try a beach on Lake Michigan or something like that.

I would avoid places like ocean city, hilton head, and myrtle beach. They are just too crowded for a family with kids this age.

  • In the US I have only been to ME, MA (obv), RI, CT, NY (all close by) and FL. We are going to Nashville in April with my in-laws and the whole clan and we are psyched.  Should be a really great time. My three-year-old neice and her 3-month old sister are coming along too so it will be a good time.
